MemberMothra LarvaeApr-15-2014 3:13 PMWith the new movie growing close, and the anticipation mounting ever higher, let's relieve ourselves a little and talk about just how popular Godzilla is in the area you live in, if you know that is.
Around where I live in 'Murica (honestly, that is the dumbest thing I've heard of since everything kids do and say in my generation), Godzilla is relatively well known, but not well liked, as most of the kids, tweens, teens and adults here are die-hard comedy fans, and laugh at the, no lie, dumbest things. Where there are fans of Godzilla, they are loud, proud and have been bugging the hell out of our local theatre for early ticket sales.
In other areas in which I've lived, Godzilla has had varying degrees of popularity. As a smaller child, Godzilla was everywhere! There were very few kids who didn't run around the weekends yelling about how they were "Godzeewa" or "King Gidah." How I remember that is beyond me.
When I moved, it was much more tame, but Godzilla was still looming. A lot of kids talked about him... And about how much the '98 movie sucks, as we (as a group) had finally retrieved a copy and watched it together. I, having watched it during my "Godzeewa" days, loved it. Everyone else was heartbroken.
After that, Godzilla stopped looming and lumbered off to be replaced with the emergence of the new mainstream. Not gonna get into detail there.
Enough about me, though. Share with us, how popular is Godzilla in your area?
NOTE- Don't tell us exactly where you live. The country would be nice, to get a general idea, but major specifics are... Y'know.

MemberMothra LarvaeApr-15-2014 3:26 PMNot very popular in my area either. I don't really talk to a lot of people and they didn't know that there was a new movie coming out till I showed them the trailers. They seem pretty hyped for the movie though

MemberMothra LarvaeApr-15-2014 3:32 PMYeah I'm the only Godzilla fan that I'm aware of where I live. That's part of what makes this forum so awesome. Finally a place where I can actually talk about Godzilla and people know what I'm saying :-)
Most around here think he's cheesy and stupid.
A few are open to the idea of seeing this new movie though. I've told dozens of people about it coming out, showed many the trailer, and they seem willing to give it a shot at least.

MemberMothra LarvaeApr-15-2014 3:38 PMnot popular where i am either
edit: although my friends who are non-fans absolutely love the halo-jump scene in the first trailer. that's what made them go "cool". THey are hyped for it, but again other than that not popular

MemberMothra LarvaeApr-15-2014 3:39 PM@Madison-Gfan182- You two have definitly given me a sigh of relief. I'm glad people are up and ready to give the Big G(uy) a chance. I'm gonna start doing that. See if I can "convert" a few people.

MemberMothra LarvaeApr-15-2014 3:47 PMIreland?.....IRELAND?.....It would be a miracle if some of the people in my village knew what a cinema was!, so ya my point is, IT'S NOT AT ALL POPULAR but I think I've brainwashed my friend and girlfriend who now tolerate it!

MemberMothra LarvaeApr-15-2014 4:07 PMEveryone I know has heard of him, most even know something about him (seen a movie when they were younger, or at least know about the 98' version). I have yet to meet anyone who just doesn't know who he is. In my office building, I know of at least 3 others who are excited to see the movie (and actively talk about it), and 4 more who are at least interested in the movie from trailers and such.

MemberTitanosaurusApr-15-2014 5:08 PMSpringfield, NJ, Godzilla is not popular at my school (and neither is Alien vs Predator). I am the only diehard fan here as far as I can tell. Although one of my friends likes Godzilla and another one respects him. Both of those friends are excited for the new movie. I think I'm the only Godzilla and AVP fan here is because the others at my school who say Godzilla and AVP is stupid are too much of a jackass to give it a try. I hate bullies.

MemberMothra LarvaeApr-15-2014 10:49 PMI knew few Godzilla fans in Finland and I've seen few Godzilla statues in videogame/boardgame shops. We've had few movies released here on VHS and DVD (every Heisei film and few from Showa) and they've showed about 10 different Kaiju films in TV. That's pretty much it.
The saddest thing happened when I was watching Paranromal Activity - The Marked Ones with my friends and when the Godzilla trailer played before one teenager in front (around 17-18) asked from his friend: "What is Godzilla?"
I cried and I was pissed.

MemberMothra LarvaeApr-16-2014 12:40 AMIn Toledo, Oh Godzilla is known, but for the most part there doesn't seem to be a really visible fanbase. I've met only a small handful of people who I would discribe as fans (though there seems to be a number of people interesting in seeing the new movie). Fortunately, of all the people who have seen my recent tattoo, only one mistook Big G for a generic dragon design -_-

MemberMothra LarvaeApr-16-2014 2:43 AMIn my town, a tiny place in Australia filled with farms, there is me, one other diehard fan and three idiots who think '98 is the shit and the original is a ripoff.

MemberMothra LarvaeApr-16-2014 5:37 AMAs saddening as a lot of this news is, we are seeing quite a lot of news that people are interested, at the very least. Keep your heads up guys.
@GojiFan- That sounds a lot like what another user on here said about their area of Mexico. I can only sigh in dissappointment.
@KaijuJira- Now that is absolutely spirit lifting! I love that!

MemberMothra LarvaeApr-16-2014 6:14 AMWell in santorini (greece) most of my classmates have heard about godzilla but believe that the 98 is the original. I am the only one who knows his history... however a lot of them are eager to see the movie
