Have you guys looked at reviews for the new live-action Attack on Titan movie? They're not good unfortunately. I was hoping for better because Shinji Higuchi is co-directing Shin-Godzilla. It kind of concerns me that many complained about the special effects, the effects looked pretty good in that Subaru commercial.

Reviews also criticize the acting and straying away from source material.

I'm actually not too concerned though, because they seemed to have assembled a great cast for Shin-Godzilla, and Hideaki Anno wrote the script and is serving as co-director along with Higuchi. They don't seem to be straying from source material, but rather going back to 1954 Gojira as far as tone.

And every filmmaker has a dud every once in a while, I think Higuchi can come back with a great film. Hopefully the special effects are better than Attack on Titan.

Anyway, what are your thoughts?

Fans are just complaining because it's live action. Many don't have much respect for suit animation. Remember, Shin-Gojira is going to be using a suit and CGI. But I don't go to a Godzilla movie for the effects. I go becuase it's Godzilla.  As far as Attack on Titan goes, it would have been better if they were a little more faithful to the manga. I have faith in Toho, but no one knows how it will turn out.

Which one 1 or 2?
I didn't read a review yet, I was trying to get surprised, but since I read so many news everyday, it was impossible not to see some titles and read a couple of lines about how disappointing it was, tbh I avoid reviews and I never read them; I go to the movies and enjoy or don't the movie, and I try to don't be so picky about comics or remakes, or prequels or sequels or all this invasion of laziness in the cinema lately.
If I'd do like this, probably even X-men couldn't be enjoyable. I won't lie I got disappointed by the cast (AOT), but I try to understand that is not a movie made to me, even with Funimation doing the distribution throughout America; I will cross my fingers and see by myself if is good or not and the most important thing, if at the end of the movie I enjoyed it or not ;)

The world will spin well past our last breath, but I will always care about you

Finally saw this one in theaters today. If the bad reviews were remotely as true, I don't think I would have enjoyed it as much as I did. The movie has same problems-- MAJOR problems, but none of them have anything to do with the fact it deviates from the source material and it certainly doesn't have anything to do with the special effects.

Outside of some compositing complaints, the special effects are probably the best a giant monster/tokusatsu flick has seen since Gamera 3. The movie is visually gorgeous, and I'm not simply refering to the effects. The set pieces and the way they're shot are all so interesting it's easy to tell why Higuchi is such an outstanding visual artist for an abundance of reasons.

The characters are pretty one-note, but honestly, THAT aspect isn't much of a deviation from the anime. I want to note that I enjoy the hell out of the anime, but have never revered it as some sort of sacred work. So the deviations came off as no more or less offensive than Jurassic Park's deviation from the book, or how X-Men: Days of Future Past merely took the bare bones concept of the comic by the same name and ran with it.

It's very, very far from a great movie, but it was okay. Enjoyable to be sure, heavily flawed with many redeeming qualities at worst. No worse than the reasons we forgive most of the 90s-00s Godzilla flicks.
