Godzilla (2014) Producer talks Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster Sequel!

Author: Chris Picard | Nov-26-2013 5:39 PM

Toho Film producer Yoshimitsu Banno who is also one of the producers for Legendary's Godzilla (2014), recently spoke to a Godzilla fansite called Godzilla Fan Universe about his career and his plans to continue on the production of Godzilla films with a Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster sequel!

Here's an excerpt from the interview where Yoshimitsu reveals that he's planning a sequel for Godzilla vs. Hedorah (The Smog Monster):

"I am planning the sequel of Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster now. A new character named Midora will appear as a green saving monster in the sequel. Midora will help battle Hedorah. The new Hedorah comes out from the toxic sludge contaminated by the radioactive waste from an accident at a nuclear power plant. I wish to realize this film with the collaboration of Godzilla fans from around the world."

Since the next Godzilla will be all CGI, it's uncertain whether or not Toho will continue on with the suitmation style used in all the previous Godzilla films. Fans have voiced that they fear this might make future Godzilla films look "cheap" in comparison, so it's possible Toho could collaborate more so with Legendary in creating future, more modern Godzilla films!

It was mentioned earlier this year by Godzilla (2014) director Gareth Edwards that if he were to do a sequel (which will probably happen) that he would love to do a "Destroy All Monsters" type of film, featuring massive Monster brawls - the likes of which we've never seen before!

CGI debates aside, it's great to know Toho is planning to continue making Godzilla films and another Hedorah feature would be a great addition to the collection. We've seen King Ghidorah and Mothra a million times, it's time to re-invent some of the older foes and introduce some new ones!

But we here at Godzilla-Movies.com want to know - what do you think? Are you excited about another Godzilla film in the works by Toho? Do you think this coule be a tie-in to a sequel to Godzilla 2014? Let us know your ideas by commenting below or by taking part in the newly updated Godzilla Movie Forums HERE!

yes i think a new smog monster

taylour_monster ›

Don't judge me here but I think toho and legendary do need to join together for any of the godzilla movies for at least a little while and then toho branch off a little bit. The reason I say this is because if the decision is made for godzilla to now be made into cgi the quality of cgi will be much better with  both companies together.

InstinctiveGigan ›

I don't like it. They need to see success in the first movie before ever announcing a sequel. The fans should be begging for a sequel when the movie comes out, not by the producers before the first movie come out. Plus it's bullshit that the producers will release this info but won't even give us a taste of the 2014 one.

InstinctiveGigan ›

In addition this story sounds like the shitty stories Toho would make for their old movies. Not at all what I hoped would be the sequel to this dark, gritty new Godzilla franchise. Gareth better be directing the next one or I'm going to fear for the worst.

xxsaberblackcrow ›

hmm so if Edwards plan,s too make Godzilla vs The smog monster squeal then that would mean Godzilla will wear the same suit for the 2014 movie again? or maybe a diffenet suit but who no,s but im getting a feeling hedorah will get a new CGI look

Godzillasaurus ›

No offense, but I am not overwhelmed at all. There is so much potential for other Godzilla films, and they decide to go with Hedorah? The overrated garbage monster? Yea, that was maybe cool back when pollution could just form together to create a frog/blob hybrid. But today? Come on now! Why not expand on cooler monsters, like Destoroyah? Why is everything all about Hedorah on this forum!?

I must add that this sounds fanmade. Godzilla teaming up with "Midora" to fight Hedorah in the 21st century, where monster movies are normally dark and serious? Maybe that was cool back when Godzilla was a power ranger disguised as a mutant dinosaur (in a movie made for kids), but now? This seems fishy... Similar to what InstinctiveGigan said. I'm sure everybody wants to see Godzilla make a return in a Japanese film as a kung-fu sensei dressed as a dinosaur teaming up with power rangers and giant butterflies to fight ridiculous-looking kids monsters. Godzilla did best when it was a serious franchise!

Toho teaming up with Legendary to create more modern (and serious) Godzilla films with modern technology is a great idea! But not when you kick it off with such a lame concept.

xxsaberblackcrow ›

GODZILLASAURUS@ Godzilla you maybe be right the new movie is going too make Godzilla movie serius and more deadly but the squeal is going too make him a good guy so i guess we might see megalon again for a 3rd squeal or idk but with all the new Godzilla movies being all CGI and a second Millenium series im going too be good with it but i hope Godzilla is not going too be a superhero too much

Godzillasaurus ›

^I fail to see why Megalon and Hedorah, two ridiculous monsters from kids movies, are so popular when people discuss the 2014 film. "As for Godzilla's opponents, I hope it is either Hedorah or Megalon!", "Maybe the second hidden monster will be Hedorah!", 'Maybe the insect thing in the 2013 trailer is Megalon!" What happened to cool monsters and/or original monsters!? Making Godzilla a full-on protagonist again is a horrible idea for a serious film, let alone an American monster film! Especially when he teams up with Cheesy McCornyname (Midora). Unless Legendary wants Godzilla to go on life support again, they better make a good, serious sequel!

Hell, using this concept for the sequel is almost like making a sequel to "Batman Begins", but making Batman's suit reminiscent of the 60s tv show costume and teaming him up with Robin.

FriendlyKaiju ›

for the love of god! anything but a smog monster sequel

InstinctiveGigan ›

I couldn't agree with Godzillasaurus more. There are so many monsters that would fit in perfectly with a new dark and gritty Godzilla. Gigan (especially the updated version), King Ghidorah, Destroyah, and even monsters llike Anguirus and Rodan. But there are Toho monsters that should never ever be in this new, darker Godzilla franshise: like the Smog monster, Ebirah (well maybe if he were made really ugly through mutation), King Caesar, MechaGodzilla, and Megalon. But see any monster could be made realistic and darker if the right team is put together. So if Gareth is not directing the sequel, I hav no doubt this new Godzilla franchise will spiral downwards and become as cheesy and lame as the Toho films; except it will be even worse seeing as how these movies are supposed to be professional.

MrAwesomeness360 ›

"Since the next Godzilla will be all CGI, it's uncertain whether or not Toho will continue on with the suitmation style used in all the previous Godzilla films. Fans have voiced that they fear this might make future Godzilla films look 'cheap' in comparison..."
WHO CARES ABOUT THE SPECIAL EFFECTS?! Special effects are nothing but tools that helps illustrate a movie's story in motion. It doesn't matter what effect Godzilla is portrayed in, the only thing that matters is that the Godzilla character is portrayed properly.

The whole "'Godzilla vs. Hedorah' remake" is a really lame idea at best. The point of this new film is to make Godzilla darker, grittier and more serious than before, right? So why make a movie that's way past its time? This ain't the 70's anymore, this the 2010's now. I'm on board with the "Destroy all Monsters" idea better. Hell, it'd be better if Legendary uses the script TriStar threw away before making their half assed version, "Godzilla vs. The Gryphon", I've read the script, miles better than TriStar's final product. Come on, Yoshi, stick to making Godzilla a blood thirsty beast of destruction, not an aborted version of Barney the Dinosaur like in the Showa series.

As for Hedorah, what's the big deal with this gigantic pile of Kaiju crap (literally)? All he ever did was crap all over Tokyo, and take a toxic dump on Godzilla, that's it. Hedorah's created by pollution, big deal, just give him a bath and he'll melt faster than the witch from "The Wizard of Oz", Godzilla was created by nuclear weapons, something that can put humanity to extinction. There are Kaijus, and Mechas, that are better, cooler and more powerful than that mud pile, like Gigan, King Ghidorah, Orga, Mechagodzilla, Biollante, Anguirus, Rodan, etc. Seriously, what's the big deal with Hedorah? He's not that great.

xxsaberblackcrow ›

Ikr a Monster made by crap come on Toho can make better monsters then hedorah

Gl78064 ›

Very interesting....

I guess they'll probably continue the Godzilla 3D to the Max concept.

Zillahater ›

Guys, am i the only one seeing a huge marketing problem here? If not, let me explain. No one beynd fans remember the first film, so making a sequel would be weird. Its like making a sequel to king kong lives, no one remembers the story and will get confused.

Kyero ›

Two points of clarification.

1) Gareth Edwards said he wanted to explore the concept of "Monster Island" used in Destroy All Monsters. He did not say anything about making a "Destroy All Monsters type sequel." That bit of information has been misinterpreted and miscommunicated countless times, and I'm not surprised it happened again here.

2) Yoshimitsu Banno said in the quote that he wants to make a sequel to Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster. He did not say anywhere in the quote that it would be part of the Legendary franchise. This is probably an independent effort on his part, as I doubt Legendary or Toho would support this given the history between Banno and Toho after the catastrophic results of Godzilla vs. Hedorah with fans and the creator of Godzilla whos aid Banno "ruined Godzilla" with his film.

Chris Picard ›

@Kyero - I realize Gareth did say he wanted to explore a "Monster Island" concept used in Destroy All Monsters, but are you really saying that he'd only want to admire the view and not the Monsters themselves? Let's be real, if they're going to do a "Monster Island" type sequel - it's going to involve some Monster Brawls.

And to clarify point #2 - never stated that the potential Smog Monster sequel would be a part of Legendary. When did I mention that in this article? I mentioned that he is one of the producers for Legendary's film, yes, but that doesn't suggest Legendary is eye-ing a Smog Monster sequel to their 2014 Godzilla flick. I think people reading the article will understand that.

Now, that's not to say it would be awesome to see Legendary and Toho team up, as from what the new Godzilla looks and sounds like so far - it would be an epic re-birth for the classic Monster. But again, you're right - no word of this involving Legendary has yet been mentioned anywhere.

@ZillaHater - I'm sure they would play them on TV and promote the original by possibly mass-selling them on Blue-Ray. There's always ways to hype up a sequel who's original is dated. I wouldn't worry about that. The word of mouth the sequel would get from the millions of Godzilla fans world-wide would be enough too.

Incredible Fulk ›

Honestly, I'd be happy if it was Hedorah for the first monster. NOT EVERY FAN HATES Godzilla vs. Smog Monster. I actually love it because it was actually the most dark Godzilla film in the Showa era and it wasn't cheapy made like G's Revenge or G vs. Megalon. It even shows people dying and melting. Something  the 1954 film did. I think if Hedorah had a reinvention like King Ghidorah, Mothra  and Mechagodzila; he would be looked at more seriously. If you read Godzilla Legends #4, you can see how great he can be. If anything, King Ghidorah should be saved for the next film!

But from what I can tell, Banno's idea doesn't have anything to do with the new 2014 film. So stop worry about it. The new film WILL be epic and awesome!!!!

Destroy All Monsters" should be the final film of the franchise. I think and the fan think this sequal "Godzilla vs Hedorah -The Smog Monster-" (The subtitle) should be more focusing on the main monsters, Godzilla and Hedorah (The Smog Monster).

2.) I beleive the second flim shoud be called "Godzilla -Monster Zero" (The subtitle) This sequel plot idea should be relate to the Godzilla (2014) movie, about after Godzilla fighting off Mutos, the human studied on Godzilla and trying to defeat him and fight the other monster(s) that might rise to destory the planet, even their are from Earth or in space. But they're too strong and their only hope is to get Godzilla to fight the monster(s) and hope he can defeat them.

3.) Also the next or one of the sequels should have Angirus, he was Godzilla's first enemy on 1955 film "Godzilla Raids Again" and then turns into a good guy and be partners to fight off the other monsters (Maybe in Godzilla -Monster Zero-).

4.) The best of Godzilla's enemies is King Ghidorah, if you want to put his greatest enemies into one film, it should be "Godzilla -Destroy All Monsters-" (The subtitle) it will be the final film by having all of his enemies in the ultimate showdown, that Godzilla must destroy all the monsters he faces thus putting the best monster of all King Ghidorah at he end for the ending of the film. Then at the end after King Ghidorah's defeat, they shall name him as always well be "Godzilla -King of Monsters-".

@CHRIS PICARD That's a huge relief to hear. Thanks for the heads up Chris. By the way, you should be ready for any tips on a Godzilla trailer release date. The Movie Maniac guy that told us about the trailer possibly being out on the Hobbit said expect the trailer or an announcement of to be out within the next 2 weeks!

Mechani-Kong ›

For the love of god @Godzillasaurus @InstinctiveGigan not ONCE did the article say that this was going to be a sequel to the 2014 movie.

Reading comprehension is so lost on this site.

InstinctiveGigan ›

@MECHANI-KONG Since you have no problem at basically calling me inept at reading I will have no problem calling you a jackass who insults people for no reason. Me and Godzillasaurus aren't the only one who thought this if you've read the rest of the comments. A producer for Godzilla (2014) talking about making a sequel with Godzilla with the idea of Legendary assisting him? Of course people are going to freak out and expect the worse. My freakout was at the idea of Legendary assisting Toho with anything related to Godzilla that isn't this new, darker Godzilla franchise as I've explained before that new Godzilla 2014 fans will be at a loss of how the monster as decreased in professionalism. So forgive me for not having your oh-so-supreme reading skills.

I think they should make a King Kong vs godzilla sequel it's long overdue and seeing the big ape and godzilla go head to head would be awesome and epic I hope they make it

KIRYU26Snake ›

I didn't know Yoshimitsu Banno is also a producer for the Godzilla 2014 movie. But if I remember correctly, he just made one Godzilla movie and this one was pretty crazy. Why don't they bring up other TOHO employees for the new project? Mr. Banno wasn't really successful with his entry in the Godzilla franchise. On the other side I'm happy that he's in. So TOHO can overwatch this new project better.

I don't think a Hedorah sequel to the Godzilla 2014 would be bad. If the serious tone would be the centre of the film it would be great. But Mr. Banno's plans sound ridiculous already with Midra and the "team-up thing". He could make the film by his own as a sequel to the Showa original, but then he should try to come as near as possible to the original costume and tone.

First of all, the new movie must come out. Then there can be more plans for the future.

But as I said once: TOHO should make their own Godzilla movies again. Remeber how good GXMG or the sequel looked. That was eye-candy and you could feel the monsters and the locations. With a full CGI movie I always get the feeling that it's not real or it is a videogame.

And I'm happy that they didn't used any Heisei monsters yet, because they were in such good films. I wouldn't like the idea that they touch them ever again.

bigbadben ›

hey guys i hate to tell you i told you so but i told you so i have told each and every single one of you that mr.banno was also in the directors chair with gareth edwards i kept telling you all that DEATHLA the new smog monster was in this film now do you all believe me? when i found out that TOHO WAS INVOLVED I KNEW SOMEONE FROM TOHO WAS ALSO IN THE MIX i didnt know who as of yet but when i had my suspecions i was right now stop complaning GODZILLA VS HEDORAH 1971 WAS NOT A BAD FILM AT ALL IT HAD THE MOST DEATHS IN A GODZILLA FILM SINCE THE FIRST ITS MESSAGE WAS POWERFUL TO TELL EVERYONE TO STOP POLLUTING AND NOW GODZILLA AND DEATHLA WILL BRING US MORE PAIN AND SUFFERING THAN EVER BEFORE

KIRYU26Snake ›

You were right then, I guess. And you're right about the movie. It wasn't bad. And it had a powerful message as you said. Godzilla Vs. Gigan was bad. I haven't seen Attack All Monsters yet, but GVG was the only Godzilla movie where I couldn't wait for the ending, because it was just bad. Sorry to say that, but it wasn't good. But I think it would be smart to leave Hedorah for the second Edward's Godzilla movie.

The first one: Atomic Danger

The second one: Earth Polution

Both are the biggest failures of mankind.

But how strong is Mr. Banno involved in the new movie? How much is TOHO involved?

thepike ›

I love Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster, and would not mind an update at all. Just make it like the original, dark and scary. Sludge covered cat, dissolving people, fish head acid trips....classic. Just please, no more Ghidorah, Mothra, or Mecha Godzilla. I would be more excited for Jet Jaguar that Ghidorah again. At the end of FINAL WARS, I wanted to throw my boot at the TV. Come to mention it, I also had the urge at the beginning and middle of that movie too. I think there is alot of potential in monsters like Megalon, Gigan(not the FINAL WARS update,) and Hedorah. Much more that Rodan and Angurius who are fun and classic, but at the same time uninteresting and weak.

And for goodness sake, a new monster would be great! Toho needs some good new blood that's good. With so many talented designers out there, Toho should have something new and exciting from time to time.

And apologies if this is similar to a previous post. I seem to be having trouble posting on this site, so I'm trying again.

KaijuFall3 ›

OH HELLL NO they better not do this crap hopefully this is fanmade couse the story sucks

godzillagirl82 ›

I don't know, I think people are perhaps jumping the gun a bit with this information. There is no official announcement from Toho or anyone that this is a movie actually being planned, this is just Mr. Banno saying that he'd like to do another Smog Monster movie. By the way, this is actually the third time he's announced plans to do another Smog Monster movie, and it didn't happen the first two times. He originally wanted to do a sequel right after Godzilla vs Hedorah, before Tomoyuki Tanaka kicked him out of the franchise, and then he had his "Godzilla 3D to the Max" idea he was kicking around for a while. Point being, unless something very concrete is said about this, or an official announcement is made from Toho, or Legendary, or whoever, at this point I don't think this is worth taking very seriously.

But all that aside, I don't think this could necessarily be a bad thing, it could be something really fun. Hedorah seems to be fairly disliked among a lot of Godzilla fans, but I think a lot of that has to do with general dislike of Godzilla vs Hedorah more than Hedorah himself. I think Hedorah is actually one of Godzilla's most interesting, unique, and deadly opponents. Outside of Godzilla vs Hedorah, Hedorah never reappeared in any of the later movies except for a very brief and rather pointless cameo in Godzilla Final Wars, so I think it could be very cool to see Hedorah again. Hedorah has been well-utilized in some other forms of media, though. Did anyone else read IDW's Godzilla Legends #4? Hedorah has a lot of potential, it all comes down to how you use him.

I also like the mention of a nuclear power plant accident in his idea, I think that sounds very Fukushima inspired, and sounds to me like a very interesting way to both update Godzilla and/or Hedorah and make them relevant. That's really what Godzilla was all about in the first place, afterall.

spinosaur64 ›

I think instead of making a sequel to something like hedorah or rodan, they should try to make one after a movie that would make since to have a sequel and to one that people renember.Biollante should return since she didnt really die in the her movie Godzilla vs Biollante.

jkzilla15 ›

i think they said hedorah is going to be in the upcomng godzilla film.

kaijugroupie84 ›

Hedorah should NOT be a part of the 2014 reboot, I'm not a huge fan of Godzilla vs Hedorah.  I can remember being 10 years old and getting that movie for Christmas, popping it into the DVD player, pressing play and during the opening title sequence, finding myself saying "WTF?!?!?" This film really isn't the place for Hedorah to make a "comeback."  I'm fine with Banno taking Hedorah to a sequel with Toho, but that's Toho.  Legendary has too high of a reputation to have a movie about an alien sludge monster that was part of a film dubbed one of the worst Godzilla films of all time.  It's too early to bring a character like Hedorah into this, he's a very controversial villian.  And the last thing I want this reboot to be about is environmentalism like the first Godzilla vs. Hedorah.  I don't think it was a mistake to bring Banno aboard as a producer, but even Toho never let him direct another Godzilla movie, that's saying something.  I don't want to see Hedorah in any of the Legendary films and I don't want to see Godzilla fly again.

Biderbeck ›

Legendary and Toho need to keep their distance. Toho in their hayday cranked out G-films by the truck load and the production values showed...the very poor production values. As an older person, i can now appreciate Bano's vision for Godzilla vs the Smog Monster, however that Hedorah took a big stinky poop on Big G is simply unforgivable. Let Bano contribute, money, ideas, and resources, but actually make another G-flick, NO... hell NO

Please Toho Please continue your Suitmation talents Please I don't care if Suitmation is getting old to me Suitmation is still better than CGI so Please do Suitmation again!!!! And stop complaining about the sequel to Godzilla VS The Smog Monster Hedorah is still awesome so SHUT UP!!!!

I think the sequeal monster should be MechaGodzilla that would be awesome but the Smog monster will be cool too.

*deep breath in*.. brief pause... "no'. Why go to the trouble of rebooting the francise ala Legendary.. then let banno do a sequel of a crappy movie.. and it was and is still an awful representation of G. A big B budget film if that.. and Bano wants to do a sequel on the heels of any success that Edward's G may have. If Toho was smart.. they would keep bano as far away from any future films of G coming out of Japan. Who knows.. if the New G film does well.. and Toho says to Legendary.. lets get married on this.. then future G films will be even better than before. If bano gets a film made before hand.. Damn.

i dont know why everyone is complaning hedorah is a bad ass monster that godzilla could not really beat without humanitys help in the 1971 film for crying out loud here i would love to see godzilla go against monsters of the past then to see him keep fighting mothra, mecha godzilla, and king ghidorah over and over that gets old really quick we need more updated versions of every monster no doubt but lets see the old daikaiju of the past like hedorah, gigan, megalon, and hell even varan that godzilla never did fight at all please guys another thing i have to tell you all is this MR.BANNO HAD LONG CAME UP WITH A 3-D SHORT FOR A GODZILLA FILM LONG BEFORE LEGENDARY GOT INVOLVED WITH THE FILM THEY ARE PRODUCING NOW AND IT WAS ONLY SCHEDULED TO BE A SHORT FILM I GET THAT BUT LIKE I KEPT TELLING YOU ALL MR.BANNO WAS IN THE DIRECTORS CHAIR WITH GARETH AND NOW WE WILL GET TO SEE BANNO'S OTHER CREATION WEITHER IT BE HEDORAH OR DEATHLA

To be honest, I’d rather see Godzilla fight/team up with Gamera. If Legendary, Toho, and Daiei collaborated on a film with those two I’d definitely watch that movie. For the Godzilla (2014) sequel, I’d much rather see them create their own monsters again rather than borrow Toho’s monsters. I mean, I’d be extremely happy to see Mothera, Destoroyah, or King Ghidorah in the new film, but what separates this movie from the original is that they’ve created their own kaijus, which adds more monsters to the Toho list and it signifies that this is an American Godzilla film with Toho roots. I’d watch this film regardless of whether or not Toho monsters were involved because there’s still going to be other kaijus besides Godzilla in the film.

As for the Hedorah sequel, I think they should find a director who’s willing to bring that vision to life. I’d prefer it if they still used situation, but just more advanced and detailed like the creatures in Guillermo Del Toro’s Hellboy films series, and the kaijus in Pacific Rim. I’d also like to see the Godzilla suitmation in this proposed film look more like the Godzilla in the new Godzilla (2014) film.

Hey guys I have been sort of watching this site from a distance for months but just had to make an account to share this info I know I would want to know ASAP. A theatrical trailer reviewing website posts all trailers within about 3-10 days of release and I just noticed that Godzilla popped up as did Christopher Nolan's Interstellar! http://www.albertafilmratings.ca/recentclasstrailers.aspx

Max Hanson ›

Also just wanted to throw it out there that the concept trailer was only 1:32 in length while the second roughly edited trailer was 2:39 (actually 2:15 if you subtract the time where the guy is talking and all) and that this site claims a length of 2:12. What does this mean? We will not be seeing the concept trailer with the Hobbit but it could unfortunately be the other trailer which was already leaked and roughly edited. Another good bit of info is that it was announced by Warner Bros and NOT Legendary. Could this be the reason we haven't seen a pulse of this film's marketing? It contributes to the theories about clashes between WB and Legendary... Still this is some great news and I hope it helps

Max Hanson ›

And there is a bit of info about Nautilus, Godzilla's codename on a leaked call sheet floating around.

Hedera is more marketable in a new, "green" world than the others in the showa era.  For many existing fans me included, he may not be a first choice but, he is still a tip of the hat to the showa tradition.  Hedra has the potential in CGI to realy shine.  Trying to turn a blob into a suite was problematic in the 70's. Without a boubt  technology has progessed enough to pull this off.  If you could make a good looking Hedra, then not only the G-fans but the public in general may develop a taste for other Showa kijue makeovers.
