Legendary recently hosted an exciting new Monsterverse panel at L.A. Comic-Con and with it came some fairly interesting new details concerning the upcoming movie, Godzilla 2: King of the Monsters! One such reveal was a new official MONARCH cave painting (snapped below). What the painting reveals could be considered a mild spoiler to some and for that we suggest avoiding reading anymore if you wish to go into the film next year as fresh as possible. However, for those who enjoy dissecting every detail, read on!
The painting shows Godzilla, Ghidorah and Mothra, engaged in combat. This painting obviously pre-dates the events of the upcoming film which tells us a few things...
1) Mothra died.
In the Godzilla: King of the Monsters trailer, we see Mothra in Larva form prior to transforming into her adult Moth form. However in the cave painting, we see Mothra drawn in adult form and combating Ghidorah. This confirms that Mothra had perished in her fight against Ghidorah, but Mothra sacrificing herself to defeat a common foe is nothing new to the Gojiverse.
2) Ghidorah and Godzilla have been enemies since the beginning.
We already knew this given the cave painting teased at the end of Kong: Skull Island, but this suggests Ghidorah and Godzilla have been locked in combat, vying for dominance of Earth for generations. Their battle was paused as Ghidorah was frozen in ice following a cataclysmic event. However once awoken, the battle will wage on again.
3) Ghidorah's origins are alien?
This one is more speculative, but given Toho's approval of Dougherty's Godzilla sequel plot and its use and portrayal of Monsters, it's not too far fetched to speculate that Ghidorah's origins are not from Earth. The painting also shows Ghidorah coming down at Godzilla from the sky. This could simply be due to Ghidorah's ability to fly, but it could also be metaphorical, symbolizing Ghidorah came "down from the sky" to try and dethrone the King of all monsters and claim Earth as his own.
4) Adolescent Rodan?
This one being the biggest stretch after analyzing the above painting, in the bottom right we see a distinct bird-like drawing. It is significantly smaller than the other 3 monsters shown. It is possible that Rodan's growth was slower and perhaps was even a monster who emerged at the highlight of Godzilla's reign, never having fully matured yet. To avoid death by the ice age, Rodan sought refuge in a volcano and rested under the Earth's crust, closer to the Earth's magma which allowed Rodan to keep growing over time until his resurgence next year.
What do you think of this analysis and the above painting? What do you make of it? Let us know in the comments!
