Shin Godzilla to Replace Hibiya's Heisei Godzilla Statue

Shin Godzilla to Replace Hibiya's Heisei Godzilla Statue

Since 1995 the Heisei Godzilla statue has been a centerpiece to the Hibiya Chanter Square--Now a contemporary Godzilla will take its place. On March 23rd, the 3 meter tall Shin Godzilla statue will become the new representative of the Hibiya Chanter Square. Given Shin Godzilla's extreme popularity in Japan, the update comes as no huge surprise. The film won 7 Japanese Academy Awards and was the highest grossing, live-action domestic film of 2016.

According to Gormaru Island, the area will be officially called the "Godzilla Square". Meanwhile, the Heisei Godzilla statue will be moved inside of Toho Cinemas Hibiya. The location opens March 29th.

The Japanese Academy Award winning Best Picture Shin Godzilla, stars Hiroki Hasegawa (Love & Peace, Attack on Titan), Yutaka Takenouchi (Best Wishes for Tomorrow) and Satomi Ishihara (Zatoichi: The Last, Attack on Titan). The film was written and directed by Hideaki Anno (Neon Genesis Evangelion) with Shinji Higuchi (Attack on Titan). Minami Ichikawa served as Chief Producer.

Makes sense to me, Shin Godzilla was wildly popular.

It's like a passing of the torch, from one memorable generation of Godzilla to another.

At least they didn't destroy it.

They should have brought back the Heisei Godzilla instead of posing shin off on us, nor is Godzilla a plant. This is just another kick in the nuts from Toho. They forget the Dinosaur will never die and can not be stopped.

^Even though he was only a dinosaur (a mutated one) in the Heisei series...

Honestly, I'm fine with this.

It's showing that Toho feels that the Godzilla name has progressed past its Heisei roots, and into a bright and shiny new future.

Shin Godzilla is the herald of this new era of Toho's Godzilla franchise as a bold and different take on the character that ultimately paid off and ended up as a major success.

^Plus, it's not like it won't be replaced by yet the next hot incarnation in 20-30 years.

I guess I'm fine with it, if that's what Toho wants, they can have it. I don't own the statues

I don't like the look of Shin Godzilla's statue. It just does not look that good compared to the Heisei Godzilla statue.
