Surely I wasn't the only one who was. I'm sure some of you were, just too scared to admit it.

Godkilla2000- Thank you! The movie did have it's moments, but to me it was an overall disappointment :(

When you say disappointed do you mean it was bad, or just didn't live up to your expectations while still being a decent movie?

MemberMothra LarvaeMay-16-2014 6:39 AM

The only slight disappointment I had was Godzillas connection to the plot. He seemed like he was mostly there to fight the MUTOS but not much besides that. I would've liked to know his backstory a little more, like did those nukes kill him or just another of his species? I'm seeing it for a second time today to see if I missed any small plot points.

Overall I wouldn't say I was VERY disappointed with it. I still loved it, and its definitly in my top 10 favorite Godzilla movies.

I could not be happier at how Godzilla was portrayed, while it is reasonable to say that we would had liked more of him, it’s the quality over quantity that counts.

This is a movie that clearly overestimates it's audience. It thought people wanted more than a bunch of lizards fighting, or stomping a city for no reason.

I agree it was good

Chances are it won't live up to your expectations if you were expecting the perfect movie.

I believe a movie like this needs to be seen twice. The first time you watch it you have all of that hype, expectations, hopes, reviews, and spoilers in your brain. Once you see it for the first time all of that washes away, and you can finally see it without all of those psychological burdens.

It works for me. I didn't truly enjoy Pacific Rim or Avengers until I saw them the second time.

MemberMothra LarvaeMay-16-2014 7:35 AM

Durpoo4- A little bit of both

Duratok- Well for me, I usually take a few days to understand and form my own opinion on a movie, but I only do that because I can't do the same the first time. But in this situation, I have already made up my mind. But who knows? Maybe i'll come across a sudden epiphany for the next couple of days.

I posted a review in the Reviews section last night. I was a bit let down as well. I still liked the movie, but can't say I loved it. The sparseness of the monsters in "Monsters" may have worked for that movie, but in Godzilla it was maddeningly frustrating. When he's there, he's awesome. Problem is, he's just not there enough. I didn't care for cutting away at key moments, especially when you've waited so long. You have to make it count. This is the opportunity to redeem the character (in an American movie), and you have to seize it, and I think they let that opportunity get away. This movie had a pretty decent finale, but it needed a couple of big set pieces with Godzilla earlier as well. I hope it does well so we can get more, and if we do, maybe they can fix/tweak some of those shortcomings. BTW, I will go to see it again fairly soon.

Here is the problem with this Godzilla.  (don't read if you haven't seen there are spoilers)

#1. Godzilla, the Godzilla most of us know, loves to smash things. He is angry, and he doesn't go out of his way to avoid things. In 1954 he destroyed a city because it was there, not because he accidently bumped into something. He did the bumping.

The new Godzilla swims underneath boats and the military safely followed him around.

It was almost like one could expect National Geographic to be on board coming along for the ride investigating this unique animal swimming in the ocean.

#2. Godzilla was never really the focus of this movie, and he was not a force of nature.

There was this idea that he would 'bring balance to the force' oops sorry, wrong film, "balance to nature" but how did anyone know this? What reason was there to trust him?

Was he somehow the "chosen one?"

#3. Godzilla just seemed rather weak to me in this. He did. I am sorry to say, but he did. The way those two monsters were having their way with him and probably would have killed him if not for the death of the eggs was a bit much. He was groaning in pain too much for my tastes. The Mutos while interesting were really not the type of creatures who could do much damage to certain versions of Godzilla in the past.

#4. The human story was weak and not needed. Your ideal lead character was killed at the wrong time, and so was his wife. Those two should have carried this film. Godzilla should have been the threat that could also 'save the day'

#5. The teasing was ridiculous. This is not Jaws some shark on a beach. This is supposedly a force of nature. Something that could actually destroy the world. A real threat not somethign you swim with on the ocean waves as in the military riding along for hm.

You can only hide somethign like that for so long and the aiport should have been where the teasing ended.

The beginning of the movie was filled with so much promise and was done well. I wanted to see showdown between Godzilla and the military. At no time did the military really unload on him.

That is one of the great traditions of Godzilla and there is a metaphoric meaning behind it.

When Japan with all their spirit fought the United States they were overcome by technology. The bomb. So Godzilla was a reversal of this.

He was natures weapon that all modern warfare weapons failed against.

This Godzilla only destroyed things that sort of were in his way, but he didn't set out to do damage. He was kinda of a nice animal, but he certainly was not a "Monster"

@TALISMAN-Bravo! Couldn't have said it better myself :) You summed up every problem I had with the movie. The fact that he wasn't the brutal force of nature they made him out to be and instead some 'nice guy' really pissed me off! Your last quote is both beautiful and true! Godzilla was indeed natures weapon that all modern warfare weapons failed against. Instead, Gareth turned him in to docile minion of mankind.

Another problem I had with the movie was the atomic breath. I know they were doing a fan service by making it blue but lets be honest; it hardly matched the new design. The fluorescent blue was so out of contrast with black slate colour. But putting the colour aside, the breath it self looked very weak and feeble. When he was charging up the attack, I held my breath in anticipation for something awesome, but instead what I got was scrawny blue fire.

^The preference of what type of Godzilla people want compared to the how the movie was is quite interesting. It seems people wanted a certain Godzilla and didn't get that one. However, AggressiveKaiju, I do wonder what you have to compare it to since you've never actually seen any of the original films.

Im pretty sure all of us gfans here shouldve been disappointed in the movie....

we shouldve known why critics loved it so much..

But yes true, Godzilla was not the main focua in the movie, he was just thrown in there to try and make g fans happy while the movie was only suppose to be about the humans trying to stop the mutos....

This movie wouldve made more sense if it was called "Muto", due to the fact that it had nothing to do with Godzilla AT ALL.

Im highly disappointed.... very disappointed, I walked out of the IMAX theater with my head down and told myself "What did I just watch, well it wasnt really a Godzilla movie that's all I know."

Gareth, I trusted you to make the perfect Godzilla movie we've all been waiting for -.- not a movie that was about his enemy and humans only.....

"Gareth, I trusted you to make the perfect Godzilla movie we've all been waiting for"

Then I think you had already set yourself up for disappointment long before the movie was released.

Funny how the big complaint is all the focus on the MUTOs...

I was a good movie with a couple of great parts. I wanted it to be all great, but it just didn't make it. I like that Godzilla was the hero, but he should have been a bit more of the unlikely hero. They never really visualized him as a potential threat. Not that he had to destroy everything in his path, but heck, you may as well have slapped an "S" on his chest and given him a red cape. And the way Edwards teased wasn't fun, it was annoying. There should have been one substantial Godzilla scene in the middle of the film. Instead, they tear away from the airport scene right as its getting started. Frustrating! And I don't know, call me a softy, but the ending left me feeeling kinda sad in a way.

SKREOOONK1789 - actually i feel like whoevers new to Godzilla would like this movie, mostly critics, we here are G fans and all we got to watch was human drama and giant parasites, and ooh yeah, Godzilla thrown into this movie for no reason.

@GMAN2887 : I can see where you are coming from when you made those comments in response to those who harped about their utter disappointment with Gareth Edwards. To me, I think there are those who misunderstood what Gareth Edward's vision for Godzilla 2014 truly is, and how he intends to propel the movie franchise forward.

Let me put it across, the way how I see this new Godzilla movie. Basically the difference between enjoying the show or being disappointed by Godzilla 2014 is determined by people from two camps.

The first group of people are those who have an eye for deeper engagements, story depth and the style of cinematography, the art direction including the broader meaning of what Godzilla 2014 attempts to represent and achieve. And not surprisingly, many top critics who lavished praise on Godzilla belong to this category. And if you belong to this category, chances are, you will love Godzilla 2014.

The second group of people, are those who look for surface level engagements, they do not really care about the foreground, nor the broader level of issues. They prefer to catch awesomeness exploding right at their faces, the pummelling and all the adrenaline rush happening which brings out that kick factor. This to them, are ingredients of what a blockbuster movie should encompass. After all, its ficticious, so the more, the better. And this group of people would surely enjoy movies like the Transformers and Pacific Rim. Which is why you would notice that a number of audiences who criticized Godzilla for being weak often drew their comparisons with Pacific Rim. Likewise, worshippers of Godzilla expecting the King to do just that, will not enjoy Godzilla 2014 because his destructiveness wasn't brought out loud and clear enough.

Which brings me to interpret the intentions Gareth Edward has for Godzilla 2014. His style of direction is similar to how the lead monster remains elusive in Jaws and Jurassic Park. Once they make their presence felt, the allure is astounding. In Godzilla 2014, I can see that he tries to keep Godzilla's presence looming throughout the movie, but keeps his appearance to a minimum until the climax. Why is this so? Let's put ourselves in the shoes of a member of the general audience. If so much has been withheld and you ended up truely impressed with Godzilla by the time he makes his appearance right at the end and then goes back into the ocean, it leaves the door WIDE open to more questions about Godzilla's origins, and his history including his future. This is the perfect recipe for a sequel or a prequel to happen, which is why Gareth Edwards is putting his instinctive bet on this movie to spawn success.

Just take a look at Pacific Rim. I enjoyed the movie, but a sequel or a prequel? Maybe not, cos I've had enough of all that smashing and whacking. Whatever follows will be the same, which is why even the producers themselves are unsure of a follow-up. There will be people of course who will bring Transformers into the picture to say nobody's tired of their sequels. Do bear in mind that in the Transformers' universe, the existing character-list is ever-expanding and they just get bigger and bigger with every incarnation, which gets people going. But to do this with monsters? Not so-cool an idea.

Imagine if right at this reboot of Godzilla, one is exposed to everything that's to know about the titular character, his history, his origins, and all his awesome smacking and devastation. If Godzilla is directed this way, its not a bad thing, but it tires the audience out in the course of just one movie. If Gareth Edwards took this path, he can enjoy success in one movie but chances are people would be tired of the sequel or even the prequel because Godzilla's bag of tricks are already out in the open. So what if there's a sequel? It will just be the same smashing and wacking old shit.

And I'm glad many people out there no longer just want to see a movie directed in that all-too-familiar classic Pacific-Rim style. Which is why you see more bouquets than brickbats handed out for Godzilla 2014. The only people I hear who have issues with Godzilla, are those who went in with smashing-expectations and came out with none.

@GMAN2887- I had no particular Godzilla in mind. What tipped me off was the fact he didn't seem like a force of nature, but that's just me.

Another thing, I made this thread to see whether or not they were people who were actually disappointed in the movie, not to attract the attention of butt hurt fanboys, as Skreooonk1789 so generously demonstrated. If you are the the latter (like the above), please exit this thread and have a good day :)

@AggressiveKaiju45: No offence, but when you set up a thread like this in a Forum (Yes, this is a forum for discussion) telling people that you are disappointed with the movie, you shouldn't expect only 'Like-minded' people to respond and agree with your thoughts about the movie. You might as well call your topic an "Exclusively-for-those-who-are-disappointed-in-Godzilla-Thread. "

You are entitled to your opinions, likewise others are. When you label others like Skreoooonk1789 as butt-hurt fanboys, aren't you yourself a butt-hurt fanboy too? - The fact that you are in a Godzilla fan-site, and you expressing your disappointment makes you a fanboy too who's being butt-hurt about Godzilla 2014 with all that fanboy expectations of yours. Or are you just being selective about who to pick on? I dun see you asking the moderator to "Exit your thread" even though he too doesn't seem to be seeing eye to eye with you on your disappointment.

I read here and there how this Godzilla was not  mean as he should be for this film; but I am pretty sure there was a good reason for this: the appeal with general public, and maybe the sequel . Maybe you already know it and let face this fact: when Godzilla become more popular was with the kaiju fighting formula, specially with the hero role back in showa era. Gareth wanted to make him strong but symphatetic for all the public, so the film should get great acceptance.  I was afraid in the past for a too dark tone with a mean Godzilla in this film because, at least in my opinion, that would hurt him more than help him to get accepted by the public. If you remember the first film, no body lamented Godzilla´s last moments, because according his role there represented the horrors that humakind could unleash to the world ruining and destroying the lives of others, like the atomic bombs launched over Hiroshima and Nagasaki; there are plenty references of it on the film: the guys in the train talking about to take shelter again, the mother that could not scape from the attack trying to comfort her children saying they will be with their father again, the orphan child contaminated with radiation, to mention some; afterwards it is mentioned at the end that if the atomic tests do not stop, maybe another monster like Godzilla would appear.  Maybe some fans would liked a tone similar to the original movie or even GMK, but think in a average guy seeing the movie, looking at the monster responsible of it getting throught the military attacks and killing everybody on his path without any remorse raising from the last round to continue with the next step in his destructive schedule. That viewer could thinK: "DAMM! Does he still continues?? When would they kill that f#####g beast? Come on guys, YOU CAN KILL HIM!!!!" If the character was accepted by the people, the film would be very, very accepted, and maybe get the chance to have its sequel, so all the developers could have the chance to get more money

DESTROYAH-X - Your assessment of the film and the two camps into which the majority of moviegoers fall was quite insightful and very nicely presented. You never once bashed either group for its likes and dislikes within films. That is the mark of an excellent awareness - and a thoughtful personality. I absolutely adored the new Godzilla! I don't think I've ever had my mind tickled and teased so much by a Godzilla film - it was refreshing! :)

AGGRESSIVEKAIJU45 - What does the phrase "Butt-Hurt" mean? I honestly am uncertain of the implications behind the statement. Is it to be taken literally - as in "their butts hurt"? Or should I assume it means that they were "hurt by butts"? This is not a coy attempt at being inflamatory - I truthfully don't understand. :)

AggressiveKaiju45

MemberMothra LarvaeMay-17-2014 1:34 AM

@DestroyahX- Fair enough. I do apologize to everyone for my unwanted set of aggresion. I did not mean to use the label 'butt hurt fan boy'. I simply got provoked at Skreoonk implication of me being a retard. All I did was say that the blue colour of the atomic breath did not complement the new design, and for that he implied that I was some retard based on his misinterpretation. I'm not demanding special treatment of some sort, but atleast extend the courtesy of justification to my statements, like you have done so.

Once again, I apologize. That being said, it would be beneficial for all of here to lay of this topic now, for the sake of peace.

I think the movie was disappointing but when a film is so,people usually complain about the direction but I personally think this time the direction was good. The best thing about this movie are the visuals.Even when watching the trailer me and all of us and even non Godzilla fans thought this movie had good direction with those awesome and thoughtful shots. The bad thing in this movie was the human drama. If the human characters were more emotional and had a little more development it would've been more entertaining and also if Godzilla was teased just a little bit better.Overall I think this movie needs a sequel ASAP but with better screenwriters.
