What's Your Top 3 Favorite Godzilla or Toho Tokusatsu Movies by Era/Universe

Draegar: The Hooded Figure

Apr-17-2017 11:43 PM

I love Godzilla movies, but there are certain ones that are deemed as my favorites from each era/universe. Here's my list.

Showa Era:

Ahhh, the Showa Era. The time of years when Godzilla was at his peak of physical fighting and techniques. Examples such as the epic defying gravity kicks he did to Megalon or the first time he ever flew using his atomic breath as means of propulsion. Such good times in those movies.

3. Godzilla vs. Monster Zero

I very much enjoyed this film. I like how this movie was able to take Godzilla, Rodan, and King Ghidorah to be put into the space element for the first time. The cast was interesting, Godzilla and Rodan giving King Ghidorah a good fight, (with Godzilla's victory dance. So fantastic!!!), and also being that how the Xilien's were the first aliens to control Godzilla, Rodan, and King Ghidorah to use for their advantages.

2. Terror of Mechagodzilla

Having Ichiro Honda & Akira Ifukube to return to the Godzilla movies was such a great thing. Despite that some people may have not enjoyed the film, I loved it. Seeing Godzilla take on two monsters solo for the first time, the soundtrack used for the movie, and the monster, Titanosaurus. Titanosaurus was a very tough monster to handle with as he seemed to do well against Godzilla. But in my opinion, the best part of the movie was Godzilla's first appearance or perhaps his greatest ever.

1. King Kong vs. Godzilla

Say what you will about who won in this movie, but I believe that it's up for the viewer to decide on who won. King Kong definitely gave Godzilla a good fight, but only because of his newly found powers that saved him, Godzilla would've killed King Kong. This movie has many funny moments to enjoy, an interesting lengthy fight, a good cast, and a great fight set up. Makes me not able to wait for their rematch in 2020.

-In a whispering tone of voice: "Don't you worry though, Godzilla will win and than they'll fight their Doomsday."

Heisei Era:

The Heisei Era. Perhaps more focused on its energy attacks from the monsters and less physical attacks. But that shouldn't mean we have to dislike it because of that. I for one love the Heisei Era and it happens to be my favorite Era so far. That's right MonsterVerse, even though you've given two great movies, you haven't exactly surpassed the Heisei's epicness.

3. Godzilla vs. Destoroyah

This movie was a great way for Godzilla to die, but at the same time to able to keep it honorable. I very much enjoyed Godzilla's suit design, Jr's bravery to fight the early stages of Destoroyah, Jr's transformation to a full grown Godzilla, and though it wouldn't last long, Godzilla and Jr. coming together for a happy father and son moment.

2. Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah

I liked the intense fight Godzilla was given from King Ghidorah. He was given no chance to counter back, but he did eventually, resulting in the mighty King Ghidorah to be defeated. Another being that this Godzilla still showed no sympathy of anykind to anything, especially to Shindo, whom Godzilla had saved on the island. Fast foward towards the end of the film and we have a Mecha-King Ghidorah. Another great suit designed and considered a fan favorite among many fans.

1. Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II

Mechagodzilla...this Mecha definitely would have been the Ultimate Godzilla Weapon. Mechagodzilla gave Godzilla the fairest toughest match he's ever had in the Heisei Era and was the first and still is the only character to ever paralyze Godzilla. These two gave each other a good fight, but Godzilla will always emerge as the victor.

Millennium Era:

Hmmm, here's an Era more renowned for its different standalones. I enjoyed the Era. It gave both the combination of physical & energy attacks the equal treatment in my opinion, but...I still enjoyed that Godzilla was rebooted because I got to see different versions in what could be done with him.

3. Godzilla: 2000

It's nice to see Godzilla's atomic breath to be changed to another permanent color which makes it to look more powerful. In this movie Godzilla gave the Millenian UFO a good fight, considering that Godzilla didn't seem to have any chance compared to it. For Godzilla's theme, I really did enjoy it. It strikes me as a determination feeling which Godzilla had towards the UFO, but to destroy it.

2. Godzilla Tokyo S.O.S

Seeing Godzilla back again for another match against Mechagodzilla III, or Kiryu for some that prefer that, was wonderful. With Mothra Adult stopping Godzilla in any way she can before her Larvae arrive shows that this fight was one that would end with serious casualties. The ending was a nice touch as Godzilla was dealt with, as well as the bones of the original Godzilla put back also.

1. Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack

Here's a movie where Godzilla gave no mercy to anything that crossed paths with him. The soundtrack mixing in with the fights elevated the film even further. This Godzilla was unstoppable and it seemed that nothing could only to later see that the spirits of the Guardian Monsters stopped him. Since Godzilla was an undead beast, he couldn't really die and in the end, it proves that point that he'll be back.

MonsterVerse (my predictions):

Here's a universe where the monsters feel very powerful. I like that the MonsterVerse is putting the "realism" into the franchise and I can't wait to see how awesome Godzilla 2 & Godzilla vs. Kong will be.

3. Godzilla

I liked how the movie showed Godzilla was a living being just like the rest of us. That he can get hurt and tired like us humans and wasn't just an unstoppable force. His theme song in my opinion made him more mysterious the way it played in the beginning and throughout the movie when it shows pieces of him, you can feel his power and just what he's capable of doing.

2. Godzilla vs. Kong

So, we will have our rematch in 2020. I'm looking foward to seeing this movie, but before Godzilla and Kong team up, I wonder who will win the fight. cough-Godzilla-cough.

1. Godzilla: King of the Monsters

Oooh, now this will be one heck of a movie when it comes out. Seeing the modern revision of Ghidorah: The Three-Headed Monster happen, but on a much more massive scale. I'd like to see jets struggle to keep up with Rodan in the sky and Rodan just bolts out, leaving them in the dust, an aerial battle between Rodan and King Ghidorah, King Ghidorah just massively tower over Godzilla and completely dominate over him in a fight, and best of all, seeing Godzilla, Mothra, and Rodan work together to take down King Ghidorah.

Shin: (Will there be more? Only time will tell.)

1. Shin Godzilla was an interesting movie for me. I liked the different approach it took and the design for Godzilla, unlike some people who can't appreciate what they've been given and have to compare it to Godzilla 2014, even though they're two films with different purposes. I would wish to see another sequel to the movie, but all we can do is wait & find out and have Shin Godzilla to enjoy.

It's hard for me to break down my favorites by era if I'm considering Godzilla and non-Godzilla kaiju films. So I guess I'd have to make two separate lists: one for Godzilla films, and one for non-Godzilla films.

Godzilla Series

3. Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla

2. Invasion of Astro-Monster

1. Mothra vs. Godzilla

3. Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah

2. Godzilla vs. Biollante

1. Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II

3. Godzilla 2000: Millennium

2. Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla

1. GMK

3. Latitude Zero

2. War of the Gargantuas

1. Mothra

3. Gamera the Brave

2. Gamera 2: Attack of Legion

1. Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris

Even with two lists, it was hard to narrow my favorite films by era to just three. There are so many great non-Godzilla kaiju films in Toho's Showa library, and every single Heisei Gamera film ranks up with my all-time favorites. I suppose I should at least give an honorable mention to Rebirth of Mothra, which would be my favorite Heisei kaiju film outside of the Gamera or Godzilla series.

Visit Wikizilla.org, the encyclopedia of Godzilla, Gamera, King Kong, Toho monsters and more that anyone can contribute to.

Sort of racking my brain on this one. Whatever it is, it won't be in order. That said I highly, highly agree with some of Godzilla: King of the Monsters' choices since he propped up my top 3 favorites in the entire series.

I do find this format of listing the movies much easier though. When people ask me to list the entire series I typically scoff. 30+ movies from different eras, by different filmmakers with different themes and styles? It gets hard to compare and in some ways the exercise devalues the merit of each individual movie.

I like this chopped up format better. It gives us more to consider about each film.

My reply to the original post's question still pending...
