GATHERING

                Dr. Haruo Honda sat in a chair, looking out at his garden. He heard his phone ring and picked it up. He read the number, recognizing it as Dr. Victoria Smith, his assistant in the Monster Attack Prevention League’s Godzilla Team before his retirement seven years prior. The two had occasionally met since then.         

                “Greetings” He said.

                “I need your help.” She replied.

                “With what?” He asked.

“There’s something big going on… Something worse than Ghidorah landed in Okinawa.” She answered. Dr. Honda’s eyes widened. He remembered Ghidorah’s attack on America’s Pacific Coast and making the plan to lead Godzilla, Rodan, and Mothra across the Pacific to fight him. Despite being aware of other monsters occasionally attacking cities, none of them were as imposing as the three-headed monster. Only when he was turned into a cyborg was a monster as threatening realized.

“What is it?” He asked.

                “We call it SpaceGodzilla. It looks like a purple Godzilla with these big crystals on its shoulders. It beat Battra and Mothra without much of a fight, and seems to have some influence over two other monsters, which are also attacking the island… How do we get Godzilla and Rodan to fight it?” Dr. Honda closed his eyes, thinking.

                “Are you sure it is the safest plan?” He asked.

                “We’re sending out Mechagodzilla, but nobody thinks it’ll be enough. The Super-X2 is damaged and probably won’t be repaired for a few days.” She said.

                “Leading them is a very simple yet challenging task. Keep them angry as you lead them to Okinawa. Before you reach the island, they should sense the monsters and see them as challengers.” Dr. Honda said, “Good luck.”

                The squadron of five Mitsubishi F2-A fighter jets and two ASTOL-MB93 maser jets flew over the Pacific Ocean, searching for their target. Although they were following the tracker implanted in Godzilla Junior, it was assumed he wouldn’t be far from his adoptive father.

                A few minutes later they saw the steam rising from the ocean.  Godzilla’s condition had worsened since the last time he was spotted. The white edges to his jagged rows of dorsal spines were now a bright orange. Glowing orange patches emitting steam covered his chest, thighs, and arms. The jets fired at Godzilla’s back, the combined missiles and maser beams getting his attention. The King of the Monsters looked up and let out a deep growl. Unable to fire his Atomic Breath in his position, he followed the jets as they darted across the clear morning sky.

                “We got his attention. Looks like Junior’s following.” One of the pilots said.

                “Estimated ETA?” John asked.

                “It might be a couple hours.” A pilot answered.

                “Try to make it as quick as you can. I’m not sure how much time Mothra and eventually Rodan can buy us.” John said.

                An identical squadron flew over the forest covered mountains of Central Japan. Although Rodan had appeared in Tokyo hours prior, he had flown back to his territory, which was somewhere in Central Japan. Before long, a screech echoed throughout the sky as a massive figure above the jets blotted out the sun for a split second. The jets instantly opened fire, but the giant pterosaur dodged the attacks, the pilots only catching glimpses of streaks of flame on the edges of his wings. He turned around and flew towards the jets, crushing one in his talons. The remaining six flew after him, firing at the flaming ends of his wings and tail. Three flew over him and were quickly ahead. Rodan grunted and followed them the occasional fire from behind keeping him moving.

                The jets kept Rodan moving, eventually reaching the ocean. In the distance, the pilots saw a spiked carapace jutting out of the water following two Destroyers. Somehow, they had found Anguirus and were leading him to Okinawa as well. Although it would be a while before Godzilla and Mechagodzilla could join the battle, it was assumed that Rodan, Anguirus, and Mothra could keep SpaceGodzilla busy for some time.

                About an hour later, the jets flew over Okinawa. The southern part of the island was already nearly unrecognizable. A crystalline fortress towering over the blocks of damaged and destroyed buildings was being patrolled by Zilla, Ebirah, and a swarm of giant insects that resembled dragonflies. Rodan swept towards it and was instantly attacked by the swarm. He screeched and swept at them with his talons and beak, but only succeeded in taking out a fraction of them. Darting forward, he generated enough wind power to force them back.

                Sensing the challenger, SpaceGodzilla turned around. Seeing Rodan, he fired his Corona Beam, but missed. Rodan flew towards him, extending his talons. SpaceGodzilla dodged and grabbed a long, thin crystal. He jabbed it at Rodan, grazing his underside. Slowing down, Rodan was an easier target for SpaceGodzilla, who fired his Corona Beams at his wings. Rodan screeched in pain and landed in a safer part of the island, quickly spotting Mothra. The two looked towards SpaceGodzilla, who had appeared to have lost interest in them.

                In the evening, the island was illuminated by a bright orange glow. SpaceGodzilla looked towards it, seeing large quantities of steam pour out of a massive reptilian creature. He growled at the new monster, who soon noticed him. Godzilla looked to the space monster and let out a deafening roar.

                “Looks like the fight’s about to begin.” John said as he watched from a Destroyer offshore.

OKINAWA

                Godzilla stepped towards the larger monster, perceiving it as a threat. It growled and turned to face him. Before either monster could attack, Godzilla noticed fourteen flying insects speeding towards him. He attempted to swat them away, but there were too many. A few landed on his skin and jabbed at his skin with their arms and stingers. Seconds later, most of them fell off. The remaining few realized the danger and flew away.

                “Those insects kind of look like something I saw up at the old Rodan facility.” John observed.

                “Some other scientists noticed the same thing. They call them Meganula. What we’re trying to figure out now is why the queen and SpaceGodzilla aren’t attacking each other. Zilla and Ebirah appear to be influenced by what we think are pheromones from SpaceGodzilla.” Dr. Smith replied.

                “But is Godzilla’s skin so hot that it’ll kill the insects that land on it?” John asked.

                “I believe so.” Dr. Smith said. The two watched as Godzilla and SpaceGodzilla approached each other. Godzilla swiped at SpaceGodzilla’s chest, slightly tearing his thick skin. SpaceGodzilla quickly retaliated, slashing the side of Godzilla’s neck. The King of the Monsters stepped back as SpaceGodzilla fired a blast of his Corona Beam from his mouth. Godzilla winced as SpaceGodzilla fired again. As SpaceGodzilla took a step forward, he was distracted by a loud screech above him. Before he could look up, he felt something hit the back of his neck. He growled and watched as a reddish flying shape with small streaks of flame on the edges of its wings zoomed past him and Godzilla. Focusing on Godzilla again, SpaceGodzilla saw his dorsal spines were illuminated by an orange light.

                The King of the Monsters took a deep breath and opened his mouth. As a blinding orange beam shot out of his mouth, flames erupted across his dorsal spines. The beam quickly made contact with SpaceGodzilla’s chest, scorching it. Godzilla quickly stopped firing. Within seconds the flames extinguished.  SpaceGodzilla winced, glancing at the steaming wound in his chest. In the distance, he saw something crawl out of the ocean.

                Anguirus looked around the island of Okinawa. He saw Godzilla and SpaceGodzilla locked in battle among blocks of destroyed buildings. Moving further inland, he noticed another monster. It looked similar to Godzilla, but smaller, much leaner, and it didn’t drag its tail. It noticed him too, and instantly charged. Anguirus stood his ground and growled at the monster. As it jumped onto his back, Anguirus attempted to shake it off. It jumped off, unable to bite through his spiked carapace. Anguirus stood up on his hind legs, rearing to a full twenty meters taller than his opponent. As Zilla attempted to slash at Anguirus’s underside, Anguirus shoved him to the ground. Dropping back to all fours, he grabbed the escaping monster’s tail with his jaws. As Anguirus thrashed his head around, Zilla ran off, leaving Anguirus with a squirming tail.

                Godzilla and SpaceGodzilla growled at each other. Both monsters were tired and injured. Determined to win, neither backed down. As Godzilla stepped forward, he felt something stab his left shoulder. He winced and moved his arm, trying to dislodge whatever was stabbing him. After about ten seconds, it removed itself. He turned his head, catching a glimpse of a purple, winged monster illuminated in the evening sky by the glow emitted from Godzilla. It flew over him, stabbing the back of his neck with its long arms. He tried to grab at it with his jaws, but to no avail.  Suddenly, he felt something hit his neck. He turned his attention back to SpaceGodzilla just in time to see him fire another Corona Beam. Godzilla grunted in pain as the beam struck his arm. As he stepped forward, the flying monster flew in between him and SpaceGodzilla.

                “What is that?” John asked.

                “Megaguirus; she’s the Meganula queen.” A scientist replied. They watched as it shot a fireball from its torso at Godzilla. Before he could retaliate, Rodan swept down and grabbed Megaguirus with his sharp talons. As she struggled to free herself, the remaining four Meganula attacked the giant pterosaur. Godzilla charged forward, biting and slashing at SpaceGodzilla, who had been firing his Corona Beams at Rodan. SpaceGodzilla let out an angered growl as Godzilla attacked. He bit at Godzilla’s shoulder, but the heat forced him to let go. Godzilla continued his assault, causing SpaceGodzilla to back off.

                Meanwhile, Anguirus sniffed at the ground. He had seen Zilla retreat underground, but he hadn’t come up yet. Suddenly, the ground erupted next to Anguirus. Zilla climbed up, knocking Anguirus onto his side in the process. He growled as Zilla began to approach him. Before either monster could act, a bright blue ray hit Zilla’s side. He shrieked as the beam seared him. The new monster charged, growling at Zilla. Anguirus glanced back, watching as Zilla ran forward to fight Godzilla Junior.

                Zilla quickly approached his challenger. Before the larger monster could attack him, Godzilla Junior shot another blast of his Atomic Breath. Zilla slowed as the beam hit his chest, but continued to advance. He swiped his claws at Godzilla Junior, grazing his shoulder as he attempted to avoid the attack. Zilla snapped his jaws at his opponent. Godzilla Junior sidestepped and bit his arm. Zilla grunted in pain and shook Godzilla Junior off with some effort. Godzilla Junior backed off and quickly shot another blast of his Atomic Breath, hitting Zilla’s neck. He kept firing, quickly knocking Zilla to the ground.

                Zilla, weak from the attack, began to dig at the ground. Before he could escape, Godzilla Junior was standing over him. Godzilla Junior placed a foot on Zilla’s side and shot another blast of his Atomic Breath at the mutant iguana’s head. Within seconds it stopped moving. Godzilla Junior turned away from the dead monster and looked to his adoptive parent, who was still locked in combat with SpaceGodzilla.

                Godzilla whipped his long tail at SpaceGodzilla. Growing exhausted from the battle, SpaceGodzilla was unable to react quickly enough to dodge. He screeched as Godzilla’s tail made contact with his side, the burning skin inflicting more damage than usual. Summoning more energy, SpaceGodzilla charged forward. He slammed into Godzilla, and after a few more swipes managed to cause him to stumble. With a final kick, Godzilla was knocked on his side. SpaceGodzilla fired his Corona Beams at the downed monster and listened to his pained grunts. As Godzilla attempted to stand up, he felt SpaceGodzilla grab his tail. Godzilla felt himself lifted off the ground and slammed back down. SpaceGodzilla repeated the attack. Before he could slam Godzilla down a third time, he was distracted by a roar. Looking to his left, he noticed a green monster under half his size, but with features vaguely similar to Godzilla.

As Godzilla attempted to stand up, he saw something fly at him. It was Megaguirus, covered in slashes from Rodan’s talons. Godzilla noticed streaks of flame forming near her. Before she could shoot a blast of fire, Rodan swooped down out of the night and grabbed Megaguirus by the neck. Carrying the screeching insect away, the noises quickly stopped. Godzilla stepped forward to investigate, but was stopped as SpaceGodzilla’s Corona Beams hit his back. As he turned around, a mechanical roar filled the air. Godzilla, SpaceGodzilla, Godzilla Junior, and Rodan looked towards the source. Godzilla growled as the light emitted by him and the fires around them reflected off of the mechanical skin of a former opponent: Mechagodzilla. 

FINAL WAR

                Mechagodzilla let out a deep, mechanical hiss at the other monsters. It instantly began to attack, firing a storm of bullets and missiles at SpaceGodzilla. The alien monster growled irritably and shot his Corona Beam at Mechagodzilla’s chest, but the mech kept firing. As SpaceGodzilla took a step forward, he felt a sharp, burning pain hit his side. Looking back, he saw Godzilla, his angered expression illuminated by his glowing chest and dorsal spines. In the distance, SpaceGodzilla saw a bright blue flash that soon made contact with his thigh. It felt similar to Godzilla’s Atomic Breath, but significantly weaker. SpaceGodzilla charged forward, ignoring Godzilla and Mechagodzilla.

                Godzilla Junior stepped backward as he noticed the much larger monster approach him. He fired another blast of his Atomic Breath and made contact with SpaceGodzilla’s chest. SpaceGodzilla slowed and fired his Corona Beam. He took a step to the right, but the beam struck his left side. As he stumbled, SpaceGodzilla fired again. Godzilla Junior shrieked in pain and fell over. SpaceGodzilla approached the fallen monster and grabbed his tail. He lifted Godzilla Junior up and slammed him into a section of intact buildings. Godzilla Junior grunted and attempted to stand up, but SpaceGodzilla kicked him back down. SpaceGodzilla took a deep breath and shot a powerful blast of his Corona Beam at Godzilla Junior, who quickly stopped moving.

                Godzilla roared in fury. As SpaceGodzilla turned around to face him, Godzilla instantly charged. Mechagodzilla quickly followed. As SpaceGodzilla watched the two approach him, he shot a Corona Beam from each of his shoulder crystals. Godzilla ignored the attack and kept charging forward, while Mechagodzilla began to freeze.

                “What’s going on with Mechagodzilla?” Dr. Smith asked as she watched Godzilla swipe at SpaceGodzilla’s chest.

                “I think SpaceGodzilla’s beams are messing with it. Either the AI isn’t functioning or something short circuited.” John replied.

                “Can’t we bring in Biollante?” A soldier on board suggested.

                “I thought she left the atmosphere and indirectly created SpaceGodzilla.” Dr. Smith replied.

                “No. We made him... There was an experiment with Godzilla’s cells in space. It all went wrong…” John said. The people onboard the ship watched as Godzilla tried to bite at SpaceGodzilla, but the larger monster pushed him back. SpaceGodzilla grabbed a long, pointed crystal from the ground and stabbed it into Godzilla’s side.

                “What option do we have left? Every other monster is either dead or appears to have left.” Dr. Smith said. Suddenly, a radio blasted static.

                “There’s still Kiryu’s manual override.” Akira said over the radio.

                “Can you use it?” John asked.

                “Yes.” Akira replied, “Going in.”

                Godzilla whipped his tail at SpaceGodzilla, who stepped back to avoid it. Despite the long battle and numerous wounds, SpaceGodzilla didn’t appear to be tired. Godzilla took a step back and charged his Atomic Breath. As sparks emitted from his bright orange dorsal spines, SpaceGodzilla fired his Corona Beams. He fired, the blast causing Godzilla to stumble back. SpaceGodzilla advanced and grabbed a crystalline projection from the ground. Before he could attack, he felt a pain erupt on his left arm. Glancing back, he saw Mechagodzilla’s glowing yellow eyes staring at him.

                Mechagodzilla charged, the thrusters throughout its body giving it additional speed. SpaceGodzilla growled and approached it. In one swift motion, Mechagodzilla leapt into the air, slashed SpaceGodzilla’s face, spun around, and landed. The mecha continued its assault, firing numerous bullets and missiles at the monster. Hearing a screech in the sky, SpaceGodzilla glanced up, seeing a streak of flame before feeling something strike the back of his neck. It was Rodan. Growling as the giant pterosaur struck his head, SpaceGodzilla charged his Corona Beam and tried to locate him in the night sky. As he finally found the streaks of flame coming from Rodan’s wingtips, he felt something hit his throat. Looking towards Mechagodzilla, he barely had time to react as it fired its Type-99 Double Maser Cannon from its mouth again. Grunting as the beam hit his face, SpaceGodzilla turned and tried to strike Mechagodzilla with his tail as it ran towards him.

                SpaceGodzilla felt his tail strike something, but quickly inferred that it was just a few buildings. Suddenly, he felt a searing pain strike his dorsal spines. Turning around, he saw Godzilla’s snarling face, illuminated by the glowing patch on his chest and his flaming dorsal spines. The King of the Monsters fired his Atomic Breath again, this time striking SpaceGodzilla’s chest. As he fired a third time, SpaceGodzilla fired his Corona Beam. The two beams clashed, forming a small explosion of pure energy that caused both of them to stumble back.

                Seeing an opportunity to strike, Mechagodzilla ran towards SpaceGodzilla. Before he could attack, SpaceGodzilla regained his balance and slammed his side into Mechagodzilla, causing the mech to fall to the ground. As he stabbed Mechagodzilla’s abdomen with a crystalline projection, he felt a burning pain hit his back, knocking off a dorsal spine. Turning around, he faced Godzilla. SpaceGodzilla growled and took a step back. Godzilla’s latest attack felt stronger.

                Thinking quickly, SpaceGodzilla grabbed Mechagodzilla by the tail and swung him at Godzilla. The two collided, breaking off Mechagodzilla’s chest plates and knocking Godzilla to the ground. Godzilla let out a pained grunt as he tried to lift himself, his right arm broken from the impact. SpaceGodzilla fired his Corona Beam, forcing Godzilla down again. Godzilla watched as SpaceGodzilla’s crystalline dorsal spines and shoulders began to glow. The King of the Monsters, weary from the long battle, stayed on the ground, accepting his defeat. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a winged figure swooping out of the night sky…

                A loud screech got Godzilla’s attention. Looking up, he saw Corona Beams from SpaceGodzilla’s mouth and shoulders hitting Mothra in front of him. Seconds later, her wings caught fire and a small explosion formed on her back. Godzilla watched as her charred body fell to the ground. Looking around, Godzilla noticed Mechagodzilla standing behind SpaceGodzilla, and Rodan flying above him. Godzilla slowly began to stand up. He still had a chance at victory.
