Destoroyah, Spacegodzilla, Final Wars, or Destroy All Monsters.

The fact that no one cared about KOTM. KOTM had Toho's top 4  monsters in it and it bombed at the BO. And some of these goofy fanboys think that Biollante or Destroyah will be in a MV film. Yeah that'll happen; A monster that no one outside the fandom knows that was in one movie 25-30 years ago. I'm sure Legendary is going to pay for that. People need to realize that nobody wants G films here. It is getting increasingly annoying to read G fan comments on here and Toho Kingdom (where it's 10 times worse) and see the adolescent fan bubble BS that they think is going to make the GA gasp in awe and just fall in love with kaiju films. I would laugh if it weren't so pathetic.

Well first of all, it didn't exactly bomb. It still turned a profit, just under what they thought it would do. Everyone, even non kaiju fans, liked the film, besides critics, and did become attached to Mothra and Rodan. Hell, my mother hates these movies and even she liked it and especially Mothra and Rodan. The main reason it didn't do so well is because it had to contend with the much more heavily marketed and popular Disney films all coming out at the same time, the same thing happened to Dark Phoenix. And of course it probably won't make everyone love Kaiju films, but we hope that they can just respect it for what it is and maybe some will like the movie itself. Obviously you have no respect for the films.

Also, it's just fun to imagine how they'd bring back iconic characters in the new series.

The monsterverse changed my life. I watched the 2014 movie and I fell in love with kaiju films. Now, i'm not saying that the monsterverse is the best thing ever, but what i'm saying is that the monsterverse is a generally well-liked film franchise. Kotm suffered from a multitude of things, but it was a generally very-liked movie. One film alone does not make a film franchise bad.

Show me proof that it turned a profit. I'll wait.

While pretty abysmal, still a profit within hundreds of millions of dollars. Also, way outperformed most of the Japanese films, including Shin Godzilla. Also, you can't judge a movie or entire series alone from the sales of one movie, like with Thank You For Smoking, amazing movie but not well known. Hell, even a lot of other Godzilla movies were generally hated when they first came out and now loved, and King Of The Monsters is already a pretty good movie. A much larger improvement from 2014 or, says, Space Godzilla, even though not from a financial view.

Legendary isn't deterred by the lack of profits, and Toho still sees potential in the Monsterverse. It's not like the Dark Universe shit with The Mummy remake. This still has potential and is still being worked on, so there's not much reason to believe it WILL end after GVK unless that somehow flops too.

Plus, if you hate all this, why are you even here? No one's keeping you here? I'm not saying you should go, but if you don't even like what we usually talk about here... I mean...

TheLazyFish,
That first link pretty much just supports that it flopped. The second link is not an official comment by Legendary. Simply, "sources close to Legendary."

I think the fact we've seen little to no promotion for GvK speaks worlds as well.

And, finally, there's more to talk about regarding the Godzilla series than just the Monsterverse.

Kotm's budget was around 170-200 million dollars, with a 100+ million dollar marketing budget. Though Kotm did NOT make box office expectation, It at least made a profit, however small it was.

Yeah, that was the point I was trying to prove for the first link. While not exactly very good profits, they still made profits. As for the second link, not confirmed, but quite possibly not deterred. They could be, but at least for now they don't seem too deterred, at least to me. Definitely don't take second source as fact though.

Gmkgoji,
That doesn't account for distribution costs, theater cuts and international distribution/theater costs. By rule of thumb a blockbuster needs to make 2.5x its budget in order to break even. If we go by the $170M price tag, that means King of the Monsters needed to hit $425M just to break even.

This sounds about right since some sources reported it needed to make closer to $500M when it was thought to have a $200M budget.

Ok, so I was probably wrong on that one lol. But even then, if GVK does well enough, they probably wouldn't be deterred as much. It really isn't end of the monsterverse if one movie doesn't do well, if the next one does well, it'll probably be grounds enough to keep the Monsterverse going, especially if they cut down costs by just creating their own Kaiju, like with the Mutos
