Joining Mothra, Godzilla and King Ghidorah in the highly anticipated Godzilla sequel King of the Monsters is the infamous Rodan. Though, not as prominent a player as Mothra and Ghidorah, Rodan will be an equally devastating force of nature when all 4 monsters collide on screen in 2019.
Legendary released another MONARCH viral video a while back, similar to the Monster Zero one we reported on recently, which teases the whereabouts of Rodan. As of 1991, MONARCH intelligence began monitoring a dormant volcano, which likely houses the slumbering Rodan. The site quickly went from a scientific outpost to a heavily guarded containment facility following a major discovery:

I like the idea of Rodan having a volcanic origin once again. Rodan is such a great, classic monster from the series, and the original 1956 Rodan still really holds up great over time. But it seems like Rodan really kind of got overlooked over the years as the series went along, certainly moreso when compared to some other big-name kaiju like King Ghidorah, Mothra, or Mechagodzilla. Rodan had an okay supporting role back in the 1993 Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla, which was quite a while ago now, but really all he did in that movie was get his ass kicked first by Godzilla, and then by Mechagodzilla. He had a couple nice moments in Godzilla Final Wars, but of course he was just a face in the crowd there. I do miss the old days of Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster and Monster Zero, and it would be great to see the return of a more "classic" Rodan, if that makes sense!
Also, I really do hope in this new movie that both Rodan and Mothra aren't just enemies of Godzilla as well. They can maybe butt heads at first, that's fine, but I really would like to see all three team up against King Ghidorah. Maybe that would be too "predictable" or seem like too much of a direct copy of Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster for some, but that's another thing that for me was fun in the classic Showa movies, was that Godzilla actually had some monster allies and friends, and wouldn't always just fight everyone. It seems like that got lost along the way in the Godzilla series, too. Outside of Godzilla receiving some brief assistance from Mothra in Godzilla Final Wars, I can't think of a single other instance during the entire Heisei or Millennium-era movies where Godzilla seemed to have any allies at all. Especially now in this MonsterVerse, this is actually the most heroic take on Godzilla we've seen in a very long time, so I think it would work really well to bring back the idea of Godzilla having some kaiju allies.
I find the idea of a heroic Godzilla with kaiju allies is appealing. With King Ghidorah as the 'bad guy,' the evil, seemingly unstoppable threat, Godzilla, Mothra and Rodan could save the day, so to speak. My main concern would be the monsters not being anthropomorphized to the point that their battles look like some kind of giant monster WWE match. We kind of had that in Godzilla Final Wars. The heroic aspect of Godzilla was evident at the Golden Gate Bridge and in his fight with the Female MUTO in Godzilla. I just don't want to see him reduced to being some kind of monster pet.
On another note, the Monarch Timeline of events is simply brilliant. What a great way to promote this film as well as future installments in the MonsterVerse Saga. Monarch, and its machinations, should be at the core of the film's narrative. We certainly have the cast for it.
I'm really looking forward to this film, even this far out.
I think here should be a scene where Mothra is chasing rodan and we just watch whose faster and then we see one of Mothras coolest ability. She bursts into speed out of nowhere and goes to Mach 4. That would be epic
Nice to see they're keeping this origin for Rodan.
Also, can someone please clear-up the Comic-Con situation for KOTM for me, because everywhere I've checked there haven't been any mentions of KOTM being at Comic-Con and I'm wondering if they're going to be there or not?
I really hope Legendary would give Rodan a more pteronodon look, like slightly bigger head, longer beak, longer horns and walking on all 4 or something like this.
I suppose a design like that would be acceptable, since that was likely what Kawakita was trying to go for in the Heisei series. However, I prefer Rodan to have more bulk and look like he can actually take on monsters on his own. I miss the Rodan that was locked in a stalemate with Godzilla for half of Ghidorah: The Three Headed Monster. The incarnations since then have been fairly weak and forgettable.
^I agree. Rodan should be at least 275-300ft tall. make him look really scary! if hes anything below 200ft. he will look like a puss next to the other 3. I know mothra should be huge! like her wing-span be huge! The cave paintings suggest King Ghidorah might be 500ft or so tall! so Rodan should look pretty big with the rest.
