Tomorrow the first anime Godzilla film, Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters, will hit Japanese theaters. But just as we hit the release date's eleventh hour Toho Animation and Polygon have given us a tease of the sequel.

The second film of the Godzilla anime trilogy has the (very) rough translation, Godzilla: The Mobile City's Decisive Battle. We're waiting on Toho's official English title for the upcoming sequel. The film will be released in Japanese theaters May, 2018.

The brief teaser synopsis reveals,

"What is the city that was left on Earth 20,000 years after all urban structures should have been devastated? There is a scene that cuts out the moment that humanity confronted 'something' in the darkness where rubble was stacked. What is MechaGodzilla? A decisive weapon created by mankind to stop Godzilla?"

You can check out the teaser poster below:

MechaGodzilla has long been rumored as a likely monster in the anime continuity. Fans have noted images that look like a robotic Godzilla in press material for Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters. Which may add up with the title since a piece of pre-production art was captioned, "MechaGodzilla City":

What do you think of MechaGodzilla's return? Are you excited to see him in the upcoming anime sequel? What do you think of the glimpse at his new design? Sound off in the comments below!

Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters stars the voice talents of Mamoru Miyano (Mobile Suit Gundam 00, Ultraman Zero: The Movie), Takahiro Sakurai (Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans), Kana Hanazawa (.hack//Quantum), Yuki Kaji (Attack on Titan), Tomokazu Sugita (Attack on Titan), Junichi Suwabe (Space Dandy), Kenta Miyake (Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn), Kenyu Horiuchi (Bleach, One Piece), Kazuhiro Yamaji (Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children) and Kazuya Nakai (Dragon Ball Super). The film is directed by Kobun Shizuno (Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare) & Hiroyuki Seshita (Knights of Sidonia) from a screenplay by Gen Urobuchi (Kamen Rider Gaim).

The movie will open in Japanese theaters November 17th, 2017 and hit Netflix sometime in 2018.

The sequel, tentatively translated as Godzilla: The Mobile City's Decisive Battle, hits Japanese theaters May, 2018.

Interesting design.

I'm very excited to see MechaGodzilla make a return! Though I do wish it was an evil alien weapon again and not a weapon developed by humanity to fight Godzilla. I'm also very curious about that head design. Still, I'm very happy to see MechaGodzilla return!

Those crystals certainly seem to imply the return of another Godzilla foe as well. One that was confirmed already to exist in the anime universe but was not mentioned in the timeline or prequel novel.

I'm sure Kawakita would have been proud.

I get the distinct feeling that it's not one of mankind's weapons. There are aliens in this continuity and their technology looks fairly similar to MechaGodzilla here.

GodzillaMember5639 XPNov-16-2017 9:39 PM

Most compelling! The design for MechaGodzilla has a very strange and almost crystalline appearance. It is quite neat! :)

Hell Yes! MechaGodzilla is back. It's been too long since the last MechaGodzilla movie. I like the new look. It looks kinda bug like and creepy, but cool none the less.

I wonder how this thing will look in action. Can't wait! 2018 can't come soon enough!

The face kind of looks like Moguera.

But I can dig it. Im excited that while this movie is being released today that the sequel is also being announced for the middle of next year! By the time Monster Planet reaches Netflix this new movie comes out!

Looks more like moguera than mechagodzilla, I think they forgot the Godzilla part of mechagodzilla. So I am not digging the design right now

"Mechagodzilla City"? that sounds cool. Would it be like a whole city of Mechagodzilla's? That also housed the pilots in bunker like houses inside the robot monsters? that would be something different.

If aliens are part of this continuity, is that why dogora invaded? isn't that thing an alien monster? I would love to know.

G. H. (Gman)

GodzillaAdmin5265 XPNov-17-2017 2:39 PM

Two different species of aliens are involved in the story. They help Earth fight back against the monsters, but are powerless against Godzilla. So they help humanities survivors leave Earth.

I have little to go off of, but my theory is that MechaGodzilla is the leftover creation from one of these alien races.

As for the other monsters, from what I gather, they simply appear from the Earth with re-written backgrounds--There are multiple Rodans, Varans, etc, for example. Not that Dogora was ever controlled by aliens anyway.

The King of the Monsters

BaragonMember237 XPNov-17-2017 2:57 PM

Based on what I've gathered from the novel, Dogora appeared from space and attacked the Russian space station Mir. So he's definitely from space, but much like in his debut film it sounds like he's just an alien organism that acted independently.

Is no one else bothered by the insectoid head?

The King of the Monsters

BaragonMember237 XPNov-17-2017 4:10 PM

Eh, I can kind of get behind it.  There's nothing really practical about making a mecha's head look exactly like Godzilla. This Mechagodzilla is a robot Godzilla only on a very basic and abstract level: a huge bipedal mecha with Godzilla's vague body shape and spikes all over its body.

G. H. (Gman)

GodzillaAdmin5265 XPNov-17-2017 4:16 PM

Additionally I can sort of see the more reptilian look in its profile of the lower images. Something more abstract doesn't really bother me since you really have to jump through hoops to justify building a robotic Godzilla.

It worked for the Black Hole aliens since they were trying to hide their identity behind the Fake Godzilla skin. It worked for Kiryu since he was designed around Godzilla's bones. It didn't really work for the Heisei Godzilla--There was no reason to spend tax dollars making it look the way it did.

So far I'm fine with something more "out there" for the mecha--I'm more interested in its origin, which could further illuminate its design.

Not fan of the head but whatever.

The Legend of Brian

BaragonMember262 XPNov-17-2017 9:02 PM

Gman, you bring up a lot of good points. I find myself more intrigued by what the context behind this MechaGodzillas creation and use in the sequel will be every day

riggzamortis86

TitanosaurusMember667 XPNov-17-2017 9:47 PM

I never said Dogora was ever controlled by aliens. I just thought it might be a connection since it's from space.

Im not really bothered by the design. It looks pretty cool.

Danzilla93

BaragonMember210 XPNov-17-2017 11:00 PM

What an unexpected and intriguing design!

One thing that particularly interests me is the concept of a "Mechagodzilla City".  That, to me, implies a lost, technologically advanced city potentially full of mechas.  Perhaps they are all different and controlled by a central intelligence.  Maybe this "Mechagodzilla" is one of many mechs from this city.  Could there be more?  If there are, what do they look like?  Could a more traditionally designed Mechagodzilla be among them?

I guess what I'm trying to say is... BRING IT ON!!!!!!!!

TheGMan123

TitanosaurusMember729 XPNov-18-2017 4:22 AM

If that's the case, Danzilla93, we might get Godzilla vs. the Mecha Horde, like in Rulers of Earth :O

uniqueusername

Mothra LarvaeMember24 XPNov-18-2017 4:23 AM

So if it only vaugley resembles Godzilla from the neck down, why call it mechaGODZILLA? Why not create a new mech? The Godzilla series only has like 5 mechs and 2 of them are cyborgs, it seems like they are just using the mechagodzilla name to drum up excitement.

I wanna see Jet Jaguar. DanZilla

GiganMember4115 XPNov-18-2017 9:00 AM

Anyone else rather skeptical of this design?

TheGMan123

TitanosaurusMember729 XPNov-18-2017 9:42 AM

Nah. All of the Japanese productions following the resurgence of the Godzilla brand in the past few years have been experimenting with the traditional formula in nearly all aspects.

Hollywood gives us our traditional monster flicks, and Japan gives us our unique and different takes.

Danzilla93

BaragonMember210 XPNov-18-2017 11:24 AM

How can I be skeptical if I haven't seen it in action yet? :D I love the experimenting they are doing with the formula in Japan, and a Mechagodzilla with a head that looks like a giant ant (gi-ant?) is definitely an experiment!  I'm all for new ideas and designs, so I'm super excited!

Danzilla93

BaragonMember210 XPNov-18-2017 11:27 AM

@TherizinoRex,

I couldn't agree more!  Apparently a mech code named Jaguar J IS a part of this continuity, and is mentioned in the Monster Apocalypse prequel novel.  I wonder if he'll pop up in the second and/or third film.

TheGMan123

TitanosaurusMember729 XPNov-18-2017 1:46 PM

You could say the very same thing about Shin Godzilla's previous few forms, but it was a unique and interesting idea that played into the direction they took the character.

Mecha-Godzilla has been an alien war machine meant to impersonate Godzilla, a Human countermeasure built using technology from the future, and a Human countermeasure built around the skeleton and DNA-based processing system of the original Godzilla.

This is hardly the most egregious thing to come of the character property, and we've yet to see it in action anyways.

Danzilla93

BaragonMember210 XPNov-18-2017 4:30 PM

What can I say, I'm not a negative nelly!  I tend to enjoy the results of this lind of experimentation, and I respect the fact that creative chances are being taken.  No need to complain six months before the movie opens.

Danzilla93

BaragonMember210 XPNov-18-2017 4:31 PM

Wonder when we'll get a trailer?

G. H. (Gman)

GodzillaAdmin5265 XPNov-18-2017 9:53 PM

uniqueusername,
I don't really see the problem. I think it looks enough like Godzilla. The 2014 monster only sorta matches Godzilla's silhouette, but the fandom goes bonkers and accepts that one. The floodgates have opened for experimentation.

RR44

BaragonMember339 XPNov-19-2017 9:10 AM

It's different. Not crazy about the design... but let's see what it looks like in action.

I still think its a horrible design, I need to see the rest of the body.
