MemberMothra LarvaeDec-27-2014 3:24 PMThe sequel that was gonna be for Godzilla 2000 was titled Godzilla reborn, It was gonna be directed by an american director Michael Schliesinger and it was gonna take place after the events of Godzilla 2000, but this time Godzilla will attack Hawaii and fight a monster name Miba that was visionized as a flying lava monster. Toho approved the script of it and the special effects were gonna be crafted by Toho Studios, but very sadly he couldnt secure any funds for the film and it was never made...
My Thoughts: This would have been a very interesting movie, more fun than the boring Godzilla vs Megaguirus film.
and seeing my favorite Godzilla suit attack a different country would have been a dream come true for me.

MemberMothra LarvaeDec-27-2014 3:34 PMI like it and Miba the lava kaiju sound interesting, but there was one thing that I don't get it, the title. Why it was called Godzilla Reborn?

AdminGodzillaDec-27-2014 3:36 PMIt sounded like crap. Schliesinger was approaching the film as a grindhouse-esque comedy with many of the trimmings that made GINO so worthless. I like the idea of toku technicians and effects crew helping an American production, but beyond that were ideas that are easy to reject. The military killing off Godzilla with conventional "super" weapons? Comedically written characters? Bringing Godzilla back to life through cloning? Where was all this technology in Godzilla 2000? Not a fan.
I also want to note that it would not have come out and replaced Godzilla x Megaguirus. That movie had already completed filming by the time Godzilla 2000 hit American theaters. Godzilla Reborn would have hit theaters around the same time as GMK. (Something with a vastly superior storyline.) And it wouldn't have replaced GMK, rather have been an American production that would be imported to Japan later.

AdminGodzillaDec-27-2014 3:42 PMKaijusaurus,
It was called Godzilla Reborn because the army kills Godzilla half way through the movie. When the military realizes they need him to destroy Miba they clone Godzilla.
Toho didn't like the idea of Godzilla being killed by the army and asked Schliesinger to change it. So he wrote that the army put Godzilla in a coma instead-- I can't decide which makes less sense...

AdminGodzillaDec-27-2014 3:57 PMThe script is not available as of right now. However there are various resources and interviews that confirm the events and strategy of bringing this movie to life. The most prominent article may by this one:
The Godzilla Sequel That Wasn't
What burns me up the most about this interview is Schliesinger's approach to the characters and his comments about the female characters of the series. I had been a fan of him until this interview. I don't think he understands why these movies work as they do since he was approaching the characters in a similar way Devlin and Emmerich approached theirs.

MemberMothra LarvaeDec-27-2014 4:23 PMAfter reading the interview, I have one thing to say. THANK GOD THIS MOVIE WASN'T MADE!
I? I am a monument to all of your sins.

MemberBaragonDec-27-2014 4:49 PMAssuming they went with the coma rather than cloning I think it would have been an interesting movie to see. Judging by how he described his characters it's no wonder he didn't seem to like the 2014 movie since the characters are essentially 180s of eachother.

The King of the Monsters
MemberMothra LarvaeDec-27-2014 6:34 PMEh, I think following the rewrites it would have been an acceptable Godzilla movie. It doesn't sound like it would have been much better than Godzilla vs. Megaguirus, or potentially even worse. I think the monster scenes might have been fun to watch, but it sounds like as a whole the movie would have been an intentionally cheesy B-movie that would have only damaged Godzilla's reputation in the U.S. and cemented the idea that the movies are children's entertainment not to be taken seriously. For all of these ramifications, I think it's a good thing this movie was never made. It could have even dissuaded Legendary from attempting to make a Godzilla movie in the long run.

MemberBaragonDec-28-2014 3:59 PMI'm torn on this one... it sounds like it would have been fun, and the cast would have been interesting for a Godzilla flm. But it just sounds, in the form it is currently (and will likely always be) in, like it would have been a big mess. I'd watch and enjoy it, since its a Godzilla film, but perhaps its best it never saw the light of day.

MemberGodzillaDec-28-2014 7:17 PMKAIJUJIRA - How very interesting! You know, I have never actually heard of this film or any of its story elements? All in all, I would have to say that some of the plot seems rather, hmm, contrived for the purpose of producing an over-the-top smash up - something I feel might cheapen Godzilla's purpose. Of course, that's simply my opinion; if the film's premise is your cup of tea, I say you should enjoy it as much as possible! Regardless, thank you ever so much for making this information known to me - it is quite interesting! :)

MemberMothra LarvaeDec-29-2014 3:49 PMI must be the only one here who likes Godzilla vs Megaguirus. Meh, oh well.

MemberMothra LarvaeDec-29-2014 5:02 PMI also can't hate Megaguirus. A lot of great ideas and you can tell they were having fun with it and not taking things seriously. The characters were bland, some of the fx were awful and yeah it did drag on from time to time. Its all opinions though. I know a lot of people on here loved the Kiryu movies and I for one thought both of them were insanely boring.

I thought Megaguirus was ok, nothing really outstanding about it, but not really awful as some say it is. Just as mediocre entry into the Godzilla series.

MemberMothra LarvaeJul-29-2015 10:24 PMI'm agreeing here with Gman2887.
It would have a been a Catskills version of Godzilla. The only thing missing would have been the rim shots.
The dialouge in Godzilla 2000-the Sony version- is enough to convince me of the error of Godzilla Reborn being produced as described by Michael Schlesinger.
On a slightly different topic, here's the Toho produced trailer for Godzilla 2000 Millennium with U.S. voicing. It's kind of nice.
