MemberBaragonJun-02-2019 4:25 PMGodzilla King of the Monsters' box office totals are lower than expected, sitting at an estimated 180 million worldwide. The production budget of this film is estimated to be anywhere from 170 million to 200 million. Just to break even, KOTM needs to make 340-400 million and to be a slight success it needs to make 400-500 million worldwide. With an opening of 180 million, that is going to be tough, but it is still highly possible, Kids are out of school, leaving bigger weekday audiences, and word of mouth will have to get people to see it after seeing the poor critic reviews. There is always the chance that the estimated numbers are low, but only time will tell.
With that out of the way, I would like to explain why i think GvK will do very good at the box office. Some people may not have seen KOTM because of how long of a wait it was after Godilla 2014, they may have lost interest. But, GvK comes out 10 months after KOTM hits theaters, this may get more people in the theater due to the fast releases keeping people's attention, much like how the MCU releases 3 films a year. Also, Kong fans and Godzilla fans can be very different people (unless you are a kaiju fan who just prefers one over the other). the general audiences will choose which one they like better and hate the other. what i am getting at is i believe a lot of the people who went to see Kong Skull Island are different people than those who went to see Godzilla, because you have two different fan groups. With GvK you will be combining both of these groups, getting more people in the theaters. Also, Even to non-kaiju fans, the idea of godzilla and kong fighting would be very entertaining ( i did a survey with some non-kaiju fan family and friends and 17 out of 20 said they would see GvK, while 10 out of 20 said KOTM looked good). This is most likely due to the fact that both are big name monsters, not very many people know who Ghidorah, Rodan, and Mothra are, so they wind up less interested. Take Batman vs Superman for example, that movie was bad, but still had an amazing opening weekend just because it was batman and superman fighting!
So yeah, that is why i think GvK is going to be successful and save the monsterverse.
Let me know what you think!

MemberMothra LarvaeJun-03-2019 12:21 AMI think your points are very good, tho I doubt kotm will end up as a success... Still, hoping GvK does better, and is enough to show there are still people who love Godzilla/Kaiju

Yeah. A success is still possible, but I really only see it breaking even after its time in the theater.
But yeah, I do see GvK being a success, whether or not it will be enough to ensure future movies in the monsterverse remains to be seen, but i really hope it is.

Yeah... Sadly. It might break even, might.
The whole future of the monsterverse is relying on the success of GvK...
Which, for reasons stated above, and new theories i have formed (which im too lazy to type haha) i think GvK will do good.
Lemme knoww if you want to hear those new theories though.. Ill post them if people want.

MemberMothra LarvaeJun-03-2019 2:09 PMthe thing that's most disappointing about it to me is that I think even if GVK does well while KOTM fails financially Legendary still wont feel confident enough in the monsterverse to continue it out of fear that a movie after GVK might be another financial failure like KOTM and wouldn't be worth the risk
I think they mentioned the future of the monsterverse depending one whether or not both movies are successful so I think both had to be successes if there would ever be any hope of the monsterverse continuing

MemberBaragonJun-03-2019 4:39 PMWell, I don't really think KOTM is going to fail. It should at least break even. It has already made it's whole budget back in one weekend after the horrible critic reviews and is still number one at the box office. Also, positive word of mouth is really starting to spread online, a lot of people are online saying "It is actually amazing".
It does have some competition this weekend, but kids are out of school, leaving larger audiences for the weekdays, and the word of mouth is just starting to spread. It could make a descent chunk through the week. After this weekend, there isn't really any huge competition. So, if this positive word of mouth continues and people decide to see it instead of the trash that is coming out, then we can expect maybe a moderate success. But at a bare minimum, i believe this film will break even.
If GvK does really well, and KOTM at least breaks even, then i think they will talk about the future of the monsterverse. GvK will be more of an event than KOTM was and there is less competition around it than KOTM.
Also, a film can be successful without making a billion dollars, we are all assuming a lot only 3 days into the box office numbers. Let us just wait and see.
