This morning the teaser trailer dropped for the Godzilla vs. Gigan short titled, Godzilla Fest 3: Gigan Attack. Toho has released the first set photo featuring the 1971 Gigan against the 2004 Godzilla from Godzilla: Final Wars. Take a look:
Filming began September 27th and wrapped on the 29th, with outdoor pickups on October 1st. The colorful miniature work and lighting emphasizes the larger budget and scale this production has in comparison to the last two shorts created for Godzilla Day. The Godzilla suit is another one of Wakasa's suits left over from Godzilla: Final Wars (2004). It is likely the same stunt suit from the 2021 Godzilla vs. Hedorah short, which did not include an animatronic apparatus capable of opening and closing its mouth on its own.
The Official Godzilla Channel reveals:
The third installment following Godzilla Appears at Godzilla Festival in 2020 and Godzilla VS Hedorah in 2021 is finally released! Godzilla and Gigan clash using the Gigan suit produced in the "Gigan Suit Launch Project", which was implemented as a special project for Gigan's 50th Anniversary! Shooting took place in late September, we moved from the open set to Toho's stage 6, where we spent two days setting up and shooting for three days. The completed miniature set has a sense of scale that sets it apart from previous festival special effects, and when the city lights are turned on in the night scene, a beautiful cityscape spreads out as if a real city appeared there.
Director Nakagawa and all the staff members were black from smoke and dust, but it was a fun scene where everyone's eyes shined like a boy. Although there was a sense of tension for Godzilla special effects for the first time in a year. Godzilla and Gigan go on a rampage, flashy and extravagant. Please stay tuned!
The short is directed by Kazuhiro Nakagawa who directed last year's Godzilla vs. Hedorah short. He was an assistant director on the Attack on Titan live action films, Shin Godzilla and Shin Ultraman. Additionally, he directed shorts for Godzilla theme park attractions including, Godzilla vs. Evangelion: The Real 4-D and the zip line attraction, Godzilla Interception Operation Awaji. He's also directed two episodes of Ultraman Z during the pandemic.
The new Gigan suit was constructed by suit maker Shinichi Wakasa. Wakasa was responsible for a variety of Heisei series adversaries, including Rodan ('93), MechaGodzilla ('93), SpaceGodzilla and Destoroyah. He also constructed the Millennium Series Godzilla suits. (Sans "GMK".) The new suit is based specifically on the 1972 Gigan costume. (Note, that the 1973 modification seen in Godzilla vs. Megalon and Zone Fighter had a slightly different head and visor shape.)
This is one of two shorts featuring Gigan that will premiere during the festival. A trailer for the CG animated Godzilla vs. Gigan Rex was released in September. Both shorts will premiere online during the live Godzilla Festival 2022 stream, on Godzilla Day, November 3rd!
Other 68th Anniversary celebration events for the King of the Monsters include:
- Godzilla Festival 2022, streaming online November 3rd
- Criterion's celebration of Ishiro Honda
- Heisei & Millennium Godzilla films streaming on Hulu
- John Carpenter hosting Godzilla and kaiju classic for Shout! Factory
