The animated sequel to Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters is merely two months away and Toho Animation has begun marketing Chapter 2 in the saga. For months now, fans and entertainment sites have been referring to the film by one of two literal translations. The popular title was the awkward Godzilla: Decisive Battle, Mobile Breeder City. The other translation was the slightly more refined, Godzilla: The City Mechanized for the Final Battle. The Official Godzilla Anime Website has revealed that the film's international English title is Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle.
The website also confirms the same staff and cast will be returning to the film with the exception of Daisuke Ono's Col. Leland. (For obvious reasons.) Additionally, a more well rounded English synopsis has been delivered by the official site:
Rising from the depths of the planet is a new breed of monster, dubbed “Godzilla Earth.” Evolving for 20,000 years, the creature stands 300 meters high, weighs over 100,000 tons and wields such overwhelmingly destructive power that Haruo and company have no choice but to run for their lives.
"Coming to Haruo’s rescue, however, is Miana, a member of an aboriginal tribe called the Houtua. They are the first humanoid people the returnees have encountered. Could they descend from humans? “Our tribal god was destroyed by Godzilla. All that we have left are these eggs. Anyone who has tried to fight or resist him has been drowned in fire,” the tribespeople say to Haruo, who responds with: “This is our last hope of recovering our home.”
Meanwhile, Bilusaludo commander, Galu-gu is elated to discover that the Houtua tribe’s arrowheads are made of a nanometal or a self-sustaining metal. It had been developed in the 21st century as an “anti-Godzilla” killer weapon deployed at their decisive battle fought at the foot of Mt. Fuji, but had been destroyed before it could be activated in the form of a “Mecha-Godzilla.” The nanometal was its base substance, and proof that the manufacturing plant can still be used."
The manufacturing plant may be the key to both reactivating and enhancing MechaGodzilla to fight a 300 meter incarnation of the King of the Monsters. It also seems to hint at Mothra, given the Houtua tribe's "god" and her "two eggs". The character Miana also has a twin sister named Maina--Tribal twins are usually a dead ringer for Mothra's priests in the Godzilla franchise. (Shobijin, Cosmos, Elias.)
XAI will once again perform the film's theme song. (Most likely to be heard during the end credits, ala Planet of the Monsters.) The song is called, "The Sky Falls".
Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle stars the voice talents of Mamoru Miyano (Mobile Suit Gundam 00, Ultraman Zero: The Movie), Takahiro Sakurai (Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans), Kana Hanazawa (.hack//Quantum), Yuki Kaji (Attack on Titan), Tomokazu Sugita (Attack on Titan), Junichi Suwabe (Space Dandy), Kenta Miyake (Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn), Kenyu Horiuchi (Bleach, One Piece), Kazuhiro Yamaji (Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children), Kazuya Nakai (Dragon Ball Super) and Ari Ozawa (Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun). The film is directed by Kobun Shizuno (Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare) & Hiroyuki Seshita (Knights of Sidonia) from a screenplay by Gen Urobuchi (Kamen Rider Gaim).
The film will hit Japanese theaters May 18th, 2018.
The first film in the Godzilla anime trilogy, Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters is currently streaming on Netflix.
