As if Pacific Rim, Godzilla (2014) and Shin Godzilla wasn't enough of a treat over the last three years, fans also have Kong: Skull Island, Pacific Rim: Uprising, two upcoming Godzilla productions and a Godzilla/Kong crossover to instill the idea that giant monsters are back with a vengeance. The upcoming Rampage, Colossal and continuing Ultraman series don't hurt either. To add to the celebration of this new age of monsters, the recent Shin Godzilla was nominated for eleven Japanese Academy Prizes. The ceremony took place today in Tokyo, Japan and Shin Godzilla took home seven of those awards including Best Picture and Best Director, shared by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi.

Here's the full list of Shin Godzilla's Japanese Academy Prize nominations and wins:

In the west Shin Godzilla was recently nominated by the Saturn Awards for Best International Film. The ceremony will take place in June.

We congratulate Hideaki Anno, Shinji Higuchi, Toho and the hard working cast and crew of Shin Godzilla for their success. Hopefully it leads to a long and fruitful next few years for the King of the Monsters.

Shin Godzilla hits Blu-ray in Japan, March 22nd. Funimation will distribute the film on home video in North America, but a release date has not yet been announced.

Always great to see Godzilla get awards.

Must kinda suck to be the animated Godzilla movie following up on this.

I wouldn't worry about the anime Godzilla film. Anime is the biggest thing in Japan. If films like "Your name" and "One piece gold" can have the success they've had, chances are, the anime Godzilla will be the same. Although Shin Godzilla did better than one piece, but still.

I'm so glad this film is getting what it deserves. In my opinion it is the best Godzilla film since gmk and the 54 original and probably the best Kaiju film since Gamera 3.

I think he means the pressure is just on for the crew of the anime to turn out a really great movie as well. No doubt it will have an easier time making bank though since animated films tend to do better in Japan.

This kind of critical acclaim is great not only for Shin Godzilla, but for the Series and the Genre. And it certainly deserves it. Shin Godzilla is among my five Godzilla films, easily. As great as the VFX and design are, it's the narrative and the human characters that make this film so dear to me, like GMK, like Gojira.

This recognition for Shin Godzilla is very satisfying. The whole ride, from announcement at the end of 2014, to the naming of the directors, to the reports about the staffing, to the design leaks, to the trailers, the premiere and that phenomenal theatrical run, including here in North America, it's been a great ride, for which I am thankful.

Holy crap wow! Just Wow! That is so freaking cool that a Godzilla film won best picture (well maybe not for the actual oscars, but still :P )! Funny thing, I didn't even know that was a thing and I am just so happy! XD
