True American Godzilla
MemberMothra LarvaeJul-18-2014 5:41 AMIf Toho started making their own films again, I wondered which classic movie would they pick to start from for a new movie series?
If it were me... I would pick the GMK Gojira movie, but I can't decide on remaking it or doing a sequel. In either case, I'd try to have additional kaijus that didn't make the cut the 1st time round... Varan and Anguirus.
Reason for Remake: Of all the Gojira movies, this one's Gojira origins caught my attention the most. It's a more mystical origin rather than trying to explain the science of the monster. By having a more mystical origin, you can make this beast super-tough and not be limited by rules of realism/science. The GMK Godzilla movie by itself had a decent storyline, if it only had some more movie time (say 2 hour and maybe some minutes rather than 1 hour and 45 minutes) then we could get to know the human and kaiju characters more... and yes have more monster scenes. We'd keep its tone and storyline, just add to it (and make the kaijus cooler looking... or meaner looking as the case of GMK Gojira).
Reason for a Sequel: The classic movie ends in a cliffhanger, with GMK Gojira's heart at the ocean's floor still beating... a sign that Gojira would return. This option could have its storyline X years after that the 1st film, all summed up in the Sequel's beginning. This would serve as a refresher for those who saw this movie, and informative for those that didn't see it. That way we could make the GMK Gojira bigger, nastier, and more powerful and people would understand. Afterall, the angry souls that possessed the 1954 Gojira skeleton made a monster that was tougher than the original Gojira despite using its bones... so doing yet another update would be understandable/expected (well, to the audience at least, the movie humans think its gone for good).

MemberMothra LarvaeJul-18-2014 11:25 AMGMK would have made more sense with less powerful monsters instead of monsters that were way overpowered in previous movies. Plus it might mean that Baragon could have been the only one with a beam attack so we would see his beam instead of Ghidorah's. So a remake with Baragon, Anguirus and Varan would be awesome. As for a sequel, it could work and it would be good but I don't know which monsters Godzilla would fight and if there could be more guardians who where too lazy to come and help in the first one. Maybe there could be another Ghidorah, a fully grown one, with 8 heads and super powerful gravity beams.

MemberMothra LarvaeJul-18-2014 1:28 PMHere's another aspect to debate on for the remake...
In the original story the angry souls of Japanese soldiers who sacrificed themselves for their country only to be forgotten possessed the 1954 Gojira bones and transformed into the GMK Gojira. However, the movie doesn't address this issue after it's made known.
What if we changed Yuri Tachibana's role in the story for the remake. Say of all the folks in Japan she alone is leading an effort trying to make the Japanese Government acknowledge and remember their fallen soldiers from WW2 and even make a memorial in their honor. However her government gives her ridicule and resistant, thus she's almost an outcast in society. Let's say she wears this amulet, a surviving token from her grandfather's time as a soldier in WW2.
When the possessed GMK Gojira senses that Yuri is a sympathetic spirit, they try to communicate their wishes to her in dreams... even showing her places where proof of their sacrifices exist. However, when the Government tried to cover this up in defiance, the spirits in GMK Gojira gets angry and try a more direct approach.
They temporarily possess Yuri (and as a result she resembles a half-human half GMK Gojira) and confront the Japan Leaders. The voice isn't Yuri's, but a chorus of all the angry souls speaking at once... and of course the GMK Gojira's voice/growls. GMK Gojira/Yuri demands the memorial honoring their sacrifices as Yuri described or they will make the people remember them and remember Gojira (overtime plus government cover-ups made the Japanese think Gojira from 54 was a myth).
When the Government of Japan still says no, naturally the monsterous GMK Gojira emerges from the water to attack Tokyo. Yuri by this point is back to normal... though some things still linger from the possession. Yuri got glimpses of their memories, the connection with GMK Gojira, and their feelings. Plus she still has some fangs and claws as physical leftovers.
For the whole movie, GMK Gojira can't be stopped, not even by the Guardian Monsters (who aren't helpign matters). This GMK Gojira can only be stopped not by fights (FW Gojira couldn't stand up to this Gojira even if he was around) but by the people remembering and honoring the courage and sacrifices of the people lost in WW2. Once this is done, GMK Gojira leaves, immensly happy and can rest in peace. If the people should ever forget again... GMK Gojira would return!

MemberBaragonJul-18-2014 2:01 PMWhile I know it can't happen thanks to the way the heisei timeline worked I would have liked a sequel to Godzilla vs Biollante that more closely followed the ideas it gave.
The idea that the g cells and basically Godzilla were dictating the powers of the world and how it worked was a very interesting concept. Super weapons, bio engineered plants all coming from Godzilla and all the countries of the world vying for a piece. There were even terrorists groups specifically targetting the g cells. It would be interesting to have another monster that feeds off nuclear energy to watch the world deal with having nuclear arms that have decided a country's power for years become a danger while the g cells take their place, and not being able to make the ANEB since Shiragami is dead.

MemberGodzillaJul-18-2014 2:08 PMTRUE AMERICAN GODZILLA - I would definately enjoy seeing a sequal to GMK! The way in which the film left off with the promise that Godzilla had not been defeated was such a tease! However, I think I'd like to see some different monsters brought in to combat Godzilla - perhaps Megalon and King Caesar. That pair of monsters would be very neat to watch go up against Godzilla, and both fit into the more mythologocal tone set up within the original GMK. Of course, that is simply my opinion on the matter; there could be dozens of other monsters that would be just as suited to the film! :)

MemberMothra LarvaeJul-18-2014 3:35 PMActually I dont think a gmk remake would be necessary, that movie was already amazing itself. Remakes are mostly done because the movies are either too old or a disappointment.
I would love to see a Hedorah remake, making that movie more serious would definetly be awsome
