Resurgence: A remake? Sequel to the original? A new Godzilla? Or return of 1954 Godzilla?

Do you think it's a remake starting at the first appearance of Godzilla? Do you think it's a sequel to the original while ignoring the other sequels?

Is it a new Godzilla and the 1954 one is still dead? Is it the original Godzilla returning somehow? Or is this Godzilla showing up for the first time ever?

What one do you hope it is? They have all happened before so either is possible imo.

I personally hope it revolves around the original 1954 Godzilla returning from the dead somehow. I don't know how they'll do it but the idea that Godzilla somehow rejuvenated would be terrifying for Japan. Not to mention this new Godzilla design has a striking resemblance to the 1954 Godzilla, almost looks like an older version of it made even more powerful and terrifying through radiation feeding (which could explain his massive growth).

Honestly, I do think LegendaryGoji had the right idea of going with a completely different origin, albeit similar overall. I think, if this new ShinGoji is gonna take any notes at all from the American film, it's to have this creature be in a separate continuity from the original film.

Now, that's not to say the original's origins should be abandoned entirely. If anything, I think some slight modifications would do nicely. Say, perhaps, this new Godzilla is indeed the original, but in a different universe.

In this train of thought of mine, the original ShodaiGoji never attacked Japan in 1954, but remained dormant, becoming more and more exposed to nuclear weapons and radiation over the years, emerging in the modern day. It ties in with the 1954 film, whilst also not at the same time.

Well, from the design so far, I'd mostly say it would be kinda like a direct sequel to the first one, with as well probably makling some refrences to GMK, since GMK made was somewhat a direct sequel and made refrences to 98 :P. As far as I can tell from both the design and title, this is most likely a direct sequel to the first and original film (they even used the original roar, which could mean somthing). And since they said it will be the biggest and scariest Godzilla (the closest scariest ones you could get were GMK and the original).

Oh, I got it! It could be a cannon sequel revolving around the original, and GMK. At the end of GMK, the only thing that survived was his heart. Just like from the Frankenstein sequels, his heart and other limbs evolved into different creatures, which could happen with the same for Godzilla. GMK Godzilla= Godzilla: Resurgence. GMK was mostly represented to be sorta like a "spirit Godzilla", whoich gave it the tone to be the scariest Godzilla. I honestly like this idea of Resurgence revolving around the original, and it may revolve around GMK in some way :/. Who knows?

Ands the title, "Resurgence", most likely a dead give away saying it's a direct sequel to Godzilla coming back from the dead somehow in someway.

A new Godzilla? Yes.

A remake? Probably and probably not. Unknown at the time.

Sequel to the original? Possible.

Return of 54' Godzilla? Negative.

@CGF,

Gmk is not the 54' Godzilla reborn. That's a huge "fan" conjecture that doesn't happen at all in the film. Hence this quote from the movie. "First Godzilla attack was repulsed. The animal was killed using an unknown chemical compound. The inventor has since died and his records have disappeared."

I'm curious how something like the 54' original Godzilla that died by the oxygen destroyer, comes back to life, grows 10 extra meters and gain 10,000 extra tons? Godzilla in that film wasn't resurrected by the souls of the Pacific conflict but, represented them.

As for the new movie. I'm aware "resurgence" means an object gains life or reborn in other words. However, Godzilla in 54' was 50 meters. 164 feet tall. How is this new Shin Godzilla who is 118.5 meters tall the same creature?

Well, Huge-Ben, that's where my idea comes in. I think it'd be a cool idea to move away from the original in the manner I highlighted.

I liken this to the classic "what if?" scenario. What if Godzilla never attacked Japan in 1954? I think this is a good way to tie in the original movie, whilst also not being counted within its continuity.

This explanation could also justify why he's so big, since laying dormant, being exposed to more radiation, and just flat out growing over the years is a good way for a creature to get so big. In fact, we could go as far as to say that the radiation, though detrimental to his physical appearance, has contributed to his size and strength over the years.

We all know Godzilla has regenerative abilities. I don't think Toho will remove that from the canon. In a span of 1954-2016, anything can happen with a fictitious monster with abilities like that, including growing or mutating even further. Maybe there's another accidental nuclear event that causes this.

^Wrong. Find me a reliable resource that came out before 1989 (the first ever Godzilla film to feature the regenerative healing abilities) that suggests Godzilla had regenerative healing in the showa era and Gmk even.

While I'm at it, don't bother with Toho kingdom. That is a "fan" website not associated with the company Toho in any way.

Godzilla isn't known for it's strong continuity, especially in the Showa era, we're talking about an era where Godzilla flew here. Fact is, Godzilla has had regenerative abilities in his lore for years now and Toho could use it and have used it before.

Years you say? 84-95 is the only time frame in which Godzilla had regenerative healing abilities. Even Godzilla 2000. Godzilla vs. Megaguirus, Gmk, Godzilla against Mechagodzilla 2002, Tokyo SOS, and final wars he didn't.

Tokyo SOS, he healed within a year but, not completely. Hence the chest wound.

I really hope it's not the original Godzilla returning from the dead. I'd prefer a complete remake--Starting from the ground up for a change. Being a sequel to the original has gotten a little old.

I'd be happy with either, just as long as it lives up to it's name.

but with the "sequel to the original" still up in the air, I find it suspicious that it looks soooo much like 1954 Godzilla.

Toho seems reluctant to ever make a straight up remake. Wether if that's because they respect the original film too much or fear it wouldn't live up to it. Probably both are true but if there ever was a perfect time to go the remake route, this would be it for Toho.

His design was largely the same in 1955, but it was another monster. I don't see why it couldn't be a different creature with a similar design simply as a nod to the 1954 film--Which is the new film's number one inspiration. I don't think artistic visual callbacks are an indication of it being a direct sequel or not.
