Godzilla, Mothra and Rodan to battle Ghidorah in Legendary's Godzilla sequel?
Chris
AdminSpaceGodzillaApr-09-2016 7:26 AMWhat made Gareth Edwards' Godzilla enjoyable (at least for me) was the realistic approach to such an unimaginable phenomena. Their take on Godzilla as being a force of nature made me believe (to a point) that such a creature could exist. I thoroughly enjoyed Godzilla 2014 despite the lack of actual Godzilla screentime. It kept true to the 1954 original from which it was based.
Now, Godzilla 2 on the other hand is a completely different story. Already, we've been told there will be lots more Monster mayhem and screentime focusing on these Monsters. We also know the sequel will feature not one, not two, but three additional monsters, in addition to Godzilla himself. Mothra, Rodan and Ghidorah - all major players from the original Toho series will be present. My question today is - what will their relationship be?
Obviously our first instinct as G fans is to assume at some point, Godzilla, Mothra and Rodan will team up on Ghidorah, but is that "realistic"?
Keep in mind the difference of approach to the Legendary cinematic universe compared to the Toho one. Toho's was not realistic. Entertaining, but not realistic.
Legendary's Godzilla is an animal, a force of nature. When an alpha Predator sees another alpha Predator, they don't shake hands and get along... They try to eliminate the other to establish dominance and/or to avoid death themselves.
Will it be a massive free for all? Or will there be some kind of unspoken alliance between the 3 "Earth Defenders", ala Jurassic World's Rexy and Blue?
My money is on a free for all scenario, given Legendary's approach to the franchise and its monsters. I can see Ghidorah being the primary antagonist for sure, but I doubt we'll see Mothra, Rodan and Godzilla joining forces.
Your thoughts?

MemberBaragonApr-10-2016 9:01 AMHopefully the writers realize that buying these monsters doesn't just include their looks, but stories, and fan expectations too. Ghidorah easy enemy to the other 3 as there's never been a movie where he's been anything but any other monsters used. Mothra's a hard call. While always Ghidorah's enemy she's been Godzilla's ally 3 times(Ghidorah the three-headed monster, Destroy All Monsters, and Final Wars) and Godzilla's enemy 4(Mothra vs Godzilla, Godzilla vs Mothra, GMK, and Tokyo SOS) with one ambiguous relation in Godzilla vs SpaceGodzilla. Mothra could go either way but due to Ghidorah it will probably be a lesser of two evils. Rodan doesn't have much variety if you go by past experiences. Being Godzilla final ally in 4 appearances(Ghidorah 3 headed monster, Monster Zero, Destroy All Monsters, Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla 2) and only ended the movie his enemy once in Final Wars. While Rodan and Godzilla usually have altercations they ultimately team up. Of course unfortunately I have a strong suspicion that Rodan is the most likely to go early as a way of showing how strong the ultimate enemy Ghidorah is.
I don't see any way it could be a free for all into the final finght if all 4 monsters make it there. Most likely it will end in all of their deaths save Godzilla as a way of estabilishing he and Kong as possibly the last of Earth's kaju going into the final movie.
Just my thoughts though seeing possible outcomes.

MemberGiganApr-10-2016 4:29 PMI can kind of see them all fighting Ghidorah, but not really teaming up. Ghidorah could be something of a common enemy, but after he's defeated, the monsters could fight each other or just go their separate ways.

MemberBaragonNov-01-2016 11:33 AMI'm not saying that Godzilla 2 should really emulate Jurassic World in any way, especially if it wants to be a truly serious film, but I think that the final battle in that film is a good example how multiple creatures can fight alongside each other against a larger threat without really consciously joining forces. Provided that Rodan, Mothra and King Ghidorah all end up being featured in Godzilla 2, the only scenario I see happening is all three of them fighting against Ghidorah. Mothra always needs to be the more benevolent and heroic monster, making her a villain would be against her character and probably would not be allowed by Toho. And since Godzilla has already been established as the protagonistic monster and the creature to root for, there's no way that Mothra battling Godzilla could be the central conflict of the film. Rodan is more flexible, but he would probably end up having to fight against Ghidorah in the final battle as well, provided that he isn't killed off beforehand.
I do see it being possible for Godzilla, Rodan and Mothra to all fight each other at some point during the film, but the only real way I see the climax shaping up is all three of them battling King Ghidorah at once. I'm not talking about a "monster conference" akin to Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster, but something more along the lines of the final battle in Jurassic World, where multiple creatures all fought against a single enemy without consciously teaming up, then all went their separate ways afterward. Again, I'm not suggesting that Godzilla 2 should emulate that film, but the basic formula of that film's final battle could very much apply to Godzilla 2. There's a good chance that something similar could end up happening in Godzilla vs. Kong as well.

AdminGodzillaNov-01-2016 8:00 PM^I've largely thought this is the route they will go if all four monsters indeed appear in the film. We may not get a blessed monster conference, but the idea of monsters moving in against a common threat is likely.
A similar situation happened briefly in Final Wars as Godzilla and Mothra took on Monster X and Gigan. Mothra did take out both monsters as Godzilla was buckling under their might at one point. However, I don't think it could be said that Godzilla and Mothra were consciously fighting alongside one another. In fact I don't think either one of them acknowledged the other.

MemberBaragonNov-01-2016 8:32 PM^ I had never really considered that scene as an example before, but that is a great example of what I'm talking about. Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla kind of did the same thing with Godzilla and MOGUERA taking on SpaceGodzilla. Both monsters fought SpaceGodzilla by themselves and were defeated, then both attacked him at the same time without really interacting with one another. MOGUERA's pilots did eventually acknowledge that they were "helping Godzilla" destroy Fukuoka Tower, but the battle overall wasn't so much Godzilla and MOGUERA teaming up as just fighting the same enemy at the same time. The same thing kind of applies in a way to Kiryu and Mothra battling Godzilla in Tokyo S.O.S. too.

MemberMothra LarvaeNov-01-2016 11:23 PMGodzilla should blow a hole in Kongs chest and have Godzilla 4 with Gidorah or smoke a whole.
I was imaging a Godzilla 2 where Godzilla and Rodan are the antagonists with Mothra being a protagonist. In Godzilla 2014 the MUTOs were hunted/killed but could be the opposite for the next film. That gives a reason for King Kong fighting Godzilla. I don't think it will happen. I expect a new monster in Godzilla 2.
If I'm making the films I would have the next best monster to fight Godzilla then the better one(s) and the best. I think Gidorah is the best. Rodan isn't better then two MUTOS in my opinion but, the combination of Rodan and Mothra are better.
The length of the movie worries me when introducing all 3 with Godzilla/Humans. I think Mothra will have the most screen time(larva). Rodan is the least. Gidorah in the middle.
What about possible battle locations? Los Angeles being wrecked in a skirmish. Battles in Chicago, New York and London/United Kingdom. My brain isn't buzzing on a East Asian city.

MemberTitanosaurusNov-01-2016 11:28 PMUmmmm your opinion is kinda weird (no offence). But Legendary won't make Godzilla an antagonist because TOHO won't agree and also "Godzilla should blow a hole in Kongs chest and have Godzilla 4 with Gidorah or smoke a whole." is not that good.

MemberBaragonNov-02-2016 5:56 AMFunny how for like 30 year the King Kong vs Godzilla rematch was like a dream, now it's happening and some people seem to want Godzilla to take on "stronger" monsters, as though Kong can't be brought up to his level.

MemberGiganNov-02-2016 6:25 AMDurp004 - Yeah, I know right. Its probably... no thanks to Toho, that they created so many super-kaijus to have Godzilla friends to defeat, that poor King Kong was left in the dust. Also more than half of the showa era Godzilla films were godzilla fought a new Kaiju were supposed to of been King Kong.

AdminGodzillaNov-02-2016 9:22 AMDurp,
The fanscape has just changed. In the early 90s it was a dream to see a rematch. Today it's considered a laughable confrontation. I don't know where the shift really began, but I didn't notice it until after the 2014 movie. So something about that film has changed people's minds and I'm not entirely sure what it is. I find it odd, considering this incarnation is probably the most susceptible to Kong.
In any case, I'm still hanging on to the slight possibility that King Ghidorah, or some other threat, will turn up at the end of Godzilla vs. Kong for the two to team up against. Seems to be the thing to do these days.

MemberBaragonNov-03-2016 8:11 AMSeems like a case of the grass always being greener on the other side.
Now that it's happening, the small minority gets to be vocal about it being a bad thing, granted their arguments against it never have much basis, but they still put it out there.

MemberMothra LarvaeNov-03-2016 3:35 PMI like the idea gman288y. A screwball in the movie sounds spectacular.
And Lord Shiro the memes aren't for you. TOHO not agreeing to make Godzilla a antagonist is making me not want to watch any of the films again.
But how's Kong going to get involved? It should get a new discussion thread. I love it but back to Rodan, Mothra and Gidorah... I got something in my head but I can't pull it out. It's frustrating and pleasant.
- Well I remembered that all three could get killed by the military. I'm not sure on Gidorah. Also a weapon that's the speed of sound would Penetrate Godzilla and Gidorah. Am I right about that?
