In the past 8 years, there have been 7 Godzilla movies. 3 have been in WB and Legendary's MonsterVerse, 1 live-action movie has been made by Toho, and 3 anime films have been made by Toho and Netflix Japan. So, here's the complete list:
- Godzilla (2014)
- Shin Godzilla (2016)
- Godzilla: Planet of The Monsters (2017)
- Godzilla: City On The Edge of Battle (2018)
- Godzilla: The Planet Eater (2018)
- Godzilla: King of The Monsters (2019)
- Godzilla vs. Kong (2021)
(In case you're wondering, while Kong: Skull Island is part of the MonsterVerse Godzilla is not a part of that movie's story and so that doesn't count)
So out of all of these movies, my personal favorite is GVK as the movie has great action and a coherent story. So, what's your favorite modern Godzilla movie?
Sound off in the comments below!

The MCU is the world's most overrated, most expensive TV show. It was an interesting experiment during the years following the original Iron Man and I applaud it's tendency to go zany in later films, but now it's just redundant.
And All Monsters Attack is an underrated, misunderstood gem. Son of Godzilla is a wonderful film as well. If you're judging the movie for how "ugly" a monster is, then I'm going to assume you're not paying attention to the storytelling.
Just because a movie is "boring" does not make it inferior to others. And just because a movie is "fun" or action packed, does not make it better.

I just was laughing at that. I liked all monsters attack when I saw it. It wasn’t my favorite tho.

"The MCU is the world's most overrated, most expensive TV show"
PFFFFFFFFT WHEEZE BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
That's even more hilarious then "The Snyder Cut is a self-indulgent, boring slog"
Honestly, sometimes you crack me up buddy.

Welp. The best jokes are the true ones.
I'll give it this much. The MCU is by and large better than the self-indulgence in the Snyder Cut. At least the MCU is more self-aware.

Hey, I'm sure you'd pick the MCU over the MonsterVerse as well.
Do you know one thing we agree on when it comes to Godzilla (besides Bear Mcreary's score in KOTM being excellent)?

Yeah, I'd say the MCU is stronger than the Monsterverse by and large. But I still wouldn't call it, "the greatest franchise ever."
Anything with the movie Captain Marvel has forfeited that title.

What is your favorite franchise ever?
Just curious

Captain Marvel though.....god, that was disappointing...

I think my favorite should be painfully obvious.

Same opinion...
I think every GFAN should watch 1998. Not because I like it, but as a reference

SarcasticGoji,
I think every GFan should watch every movie, personally. It's a long journey, but that's part of the excitement. 36 films is a long road, but why turn that down?

I still have a few to watch 18 I think?

I still have to see all monsters attack godzilla vs biollante and godzilla vs king ghidorah

All monsters attack is not part of the Showa continuity but is set in the “real world”

oh so it isnt a godzilla movie thus
I dont have to watch it? (yesssssssssss)

So in your eyes All Monsters Attack is good but the MonsterVerse Godzilla movies are bad...

I never said it wasn’t, godzilla is just in his dreams,

yeah but godzilla is just in his dreams so it isnt godzilla movie. godzilla is just kinda a cameo

@SonicTiger
Favorite Franchise
1. Jurassic Park
2. Godzilla
3. Alien
4. Predator
5. Terminator
alien would have been higher but now with it in Disney's hands it got downgraded

I haven't seen Godzilla vs Biollante, Godzilla 1984(?) and Shin Godzilla, but I own all the rest.

Godzilla vs Biollante and Godzilla 84' are great, Shin Godzilla's good (although I think that it's a little over rated). You should definitely check them out, they're worth a watch.

SasquaDash,
I never said all the Monsterverse Godzilla movies were bad.
But, yes, All Monsters Attack is an infinitely more compelling and more deeply rooted story about the Japanese people during a very difficult point in time.
Godzilla vs. Kong is about... a monkey and a lizard slapping each other.
Monster_Zero,
The Return of Godzilla and Godzilla vs. Biollante are probably the best of the Heisei era. The former has some pretty thin characters, but the atmospheric tone is unique to the series. Additionally, Keiju Kobayashi as Prime Minister Mitamura is absolutely incredible.
Biollante, for all intents and purposes, shouldn't be as good as it is. But the characters are engaging, the effects are top notch and the ideas of how the world reacts to Godzilla's biological application is fascinating.
The Shin Godzilla is just on a whole different level. It's a very dense, dark satire on the Fukushima disaster from 2011, the issues with Japanese emergency policy and a commentary on constitutional restrictions the country has had to endure. Godzilla plays the part of both a natural disaster and an uncertain, foreign threat, which leaves the characters confused over how to react to him while adhering to strict rules. It's a movie deeply rooted in recent Japanese issues and topics. (As it should be.)

G.H. (gman)
godzilla vs destroyah is better than return of godzilla and godzilla vs biollante by FAR. so its the easily the best of the heisei series.

Godzilla vs Kong is about an ancestral rivalry between two god-like beings that branches back to an ancient war of Titans. The battle is reignited in modern times, as the "mortal" humans are caught in the middle, with some (APEX) attempting to disrupt the natural order by getting involved in the battle.
All Monsters Attack is about a kid who dreams that he's hanging out with Minilla/Minya (who can talk for some reason) as they watch stock footage from other (and better) Godzilla films.
I'm not trying to disrespect your opinions, but I honestly don't see how All Monsters Attack is more compelling than the MonsterVerse movies...

Xenotaris, favorite franchises for me:
1. MCU
2. Star Wars
3. MonsterVerse
4. Transformers

In the third act of Shin, it seems to become patriotic, and rather than showing the government as corruption chose to show them as good people trying their best. To me it balances that conflict very well.

This is probably an unpopular vote, but I was really surprised and moved by the Anime Trilogy. I had pretty low expectations going in (wasn't excited about the future premise) but once I got past the first movie I started to understand what they were trying to do.
It was really interesting to see how Godzilla, MG and KG could evolve over 20 thousand years into almost literal "gods".
Also I applaud them for going for such an adult dark ending!
