Michael Dougherty's monstrous Godzilla sequel, Godzilla 2: King of the Monsters has been nominated for a Razzie Award - so what?
The Razzie Awards are a laughable, if anything satirical mockery of the more established and respected award ceremonies in Hollywood. Instead of highlighting films for their great achievements and success, they instead focus their sights on the faults of films and their makers.
To our surprise, Godzilla 2 was nominated for one such Razzie for Worst Remake, Rip-Off or Sequel. This specific category is meant to shame films that fail to live up to expectations, an unrealistic assertion considering many fans and critics seemed to enjoy King of the Monsters and praised it for being the sequel we all had been waiting for since Gareth Edwards' Godzilla from 2014.
Should fans really take this nomination as anything meaningful? Absolutely not. As staffer GMan pointed out recently, Godzilla has a far more successful recognition track record than many would assume, especially with the Japanese Academy Awards - Shin-Godzilla of which won a number of awards including Best Picture and Best Director among many others.
People are sharing this Razzie news because it legitimately came as a surprise since King of the Monsters in its own right was not a bad film at all. We urge readers to share news of Godzilla's successful acknowledgements in Hollywood and across the globe as well, if not more than the satirical digs we're seeing the likes of from the Razzies. Godzilla is the largest and longest film franchise in cinema history and you don't get there by being "Worst" anything in any category.
Haters gonna hate, as they say. Long live the King.
