Now I have been reading lots and lots of speculation threads for the new Godzilla sequel. And each and every thread is missing something, a sense of realism. Sure its cute and all to put on our little kiddy pants from our child hood and enjoy everything we loved about the king of the monster...but.....when it comes down to specualtion we need to think a little bit more realistic. For example, I was just done reading a thread on what king ghidorah's orgin should be and all of them were the smae "make him a space monster" or "make him born from a meteorite". I mean C'mon guys we can think bigger than this. Gareth once said in an interview that godzilla 2014 and future films will be made for everyone, not just Gfans. So in that case, we have to make sacrifices. Ghidorah being a space monster in these next films just isn't going to cut it especially in this type of godzilla universe were its so grounded. Can we be upset that he wasn't a space monster, sure I guess. But just remember that Gareth Edwards Godzilla 2014 and following sequels arn't going to please the masters. All I ask is that we be a little bit more logical as to how these future toho monsters will fit into this universe. Now just to let you know this was not intended as a threat even if it may have looked like it was and I mean to have this request and conversation in peace not conflict :3

^But they still didn't explain how Godzilla has survived this long. How he survived the bomb. How he's capable of consuming radiation. How he's able to fire an atomic ray. Are others like him still alive. Where has he been since the 1954 bombings. Why did they attempt to kill him if he wasn't attacking yet.  It was a very vague explaination using key phrases like "alpha predator" and "feeds off radiation" nothing more.

The same can be done for King Ghidorah. Audiences may like explaination, but they don't like over explaination. That's when you run into disasters like Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla. King Ghidorah doesn't need every question about him answered, just like Godzilla. An vague alien origin will work just fine.

I agree with that, but I don't agree that "enough info" equates knowing exactly why he's on earth or where he came from or how he was created. As long as the audience knows he is a chaotic planet destroyer it makes sense. It's simply what he does. Not unlike the Joker really.

YES! The Joker is a great comparison to King Ghidorah!

"Sorry" and "It doesn't work like that" seem like pretty poor ways to explain why that doesn't work and why "only marvel and DC get away" using that.

In any case your assumption ignores movies that aren't DC and Marvel that it has worked for. Clover's origins weren't really explained in the film Cloverfield either and that's the same sub-genre as Godzilla. The main character of the film Drive has absolutely no backstory and the audience doesn't even know the character's name. It was also considered one of the best movies of 2011. The original Predator didn't have a back history when it first came out. Audiences just accepted it was an alien hunter taking out a group of soldiers. Fans and critics maintain that it's still the best one today regardless of all the needless backstory.

Vague origins still work in movies outside the comic book genre. I'm not entirely sure why you're assuming otherwise.

The best example of a dark, serious, and very grounded film featuring an alien is John Carpenter's The Thing. It is extremely character-driven and gives very little backstory on the alien's origins, only its abilities. A shape-shifting alien that imitates lifeforms it comes into contact with is not the most "realistic" antagonist you could put in a movie, but the way it is handled is completely serious and believable. My point is, the creatures themselves do not need to be realistic or adequately explained as long as they are handled in a way that is serious and suspends disbelief. Gareth had stated that his vision for the series is "What if this stuff really happened?", not "What if this stuff were more realistic?" It's all about how the monsters are handled and how the characters react to them.

Exactly. You can make audiences believe anything if you have the right characters represented that showcase actual Humans and how they'd take in everything that's happening. King Ghidorah is quite the peculiar case. I'd say that we're looking at a creature so bizarre, it's even considered an anomaly by other giant creatures. Think like the Predator form the Predator fims, or the Xenomorph from Alien.

G. H. (Gman)

AdminGodzillaSep-26-2014 9:18 AM

^This is the wisest thing said yet. It's not about the explaination, it's about how grounded the characters are and on what level the audience believes they believe it. Even explaination can border into the "cheesy" realm with audiences rolling their eyes at over-exposition. People can tell when characters are written just to explain something else which is why Dr. Serizawa and Dr. Graham are considered fairly wasted characters in the new movie. They're just mouth pieces for Godzilla and MUTO, not really characters.

GMAN2887@ with respect sir, Ive explained to you my reason for not having him in space so many times ive even lost count. I have an excuse to give such a short and un-discriptive answer because i'm tired of explaining my reason of having ghidorah an earth monster countless times. And i'm not like the other G-fans who will sit here and right a 3 paragraph essay to you about an explanation. If ya wana be schooled then go to school. But i'm no teacher, I lay down the answer and thats that. Now i'm going to repeat my reason only one more time and if you ask me one more time to repeat this reason then its too bad for you.

The reason why I don't think ghidorah should have an space orgin is because its too unrealistic, it sounds cheasy, and the general adiuence wouldn't except such a bullshite story. Hell people at my school complain about pacific rim because they felt like the kaiju's orgin was stupid and unrealistic. So no if you think the general adiuence will except this then your wrong, especialy not a whole lot. Making ghidorah come from a meteaor or randomly just appear from space out of the blue would seem kinda cheasy. Especially if your not going to explain where he came from and why he is here. Godzilla's orgin was explained enough, he came from a time when the earth was 10 times more radio-active then it is today and the reason why he was awakened is to hunt the M.U.T.O's. Not to much info and not to little.

Gman2887@ I highly disagree with the last comment you posted. There is a large group of adiuence like me who demand explanation. And Dr.Serizara was a badass in this movie. Dr.serizara was wasted in this movie? PFFT please you don't even know a wasted character when you see one. Raleigh in pacific rim was wasted, raliegh's brother was a wasted character, ect.

Trust me I love aliens vs predator, especialy xeno's. And the reason why I enjoy the films is because there scary, badass, and have pretty well explained orgins. Now if king ghidorah was going to be in space, then you better damn well give us a good orgin story for him if your going down that road.

@Gojira 2014,

with all due respect, i am going to have to ask you kindly to watch the langauge around here. Thank you!

Not to mention, king ghidorah is coming from space. He has to, there really is no other explanation on why he should be considered an earth monster. If they did that like in GMK, then your most die hard fans are not going to be happy with it. We all want king ghidorah to come to earth from space.

Gojira2014,
Attitude aside, indeed you have explained this over and over and indeed your explaination is something I massively disagree with because it's still based on your opinion. To assume a space origin or vague space origin is "cheesy" as you put it is to assume a position of authority over all G-Fans and the entire general audience-- Which you do not have. Perhaps if you came up with some better evidence about how and why that wouldn't work some of us would be more inclined listen. And I'm sorry, but you're school aged friends are not a majority representation of the general audiences and is a poor measuring stick otherwise. That's not very convincing evidence.

What isn't a poor measuring stick is the recorded success of Drive, Cloverfield, Predator, The Thing. Unlike myself and The King of the Monsters, you failed to show examples of vague origins not working and have side-stepped what we've pointed out completely. These are examples of vague origins not only working outside of DC and Marvel films, which you've convinced yourself only works there, but examples of films that are highly acclaimed.

As for my last post, I think after being paid to review 400+ movies over the last 10 years I know what a wasted character looks like. Raleigh had a full circle story arc that began with the tragedy of his brother's death and he came full circle to save Mako, rectifying the fact he couldn't do the same with his brother. Serizawa had no real journey or story arc. His entire character was written to tell audiences about Godzilla and MUTO. He disappears during the third act completely and isn't seen again until he watches Godzilla leave. Unlike Raleigh, who goes from a cocky pilot, to a somber verteran and finally a man reinvigorated by the future, Serizawa has no real development.

BIGBADBEN@ not ALL of us. And sorry but what comes out of my mouth really isn't my decision, it depends on how frustrated I am. In the name of america I do in fact have a right to swear.

GMAN2887@ Meh I can argue with that, as much as I disagree with you, you do infact have a point there. But i'm still not changing my mind. Plus what do you mean by "you failed to show examples"? Havn't I already told you I wasn't going to be going into full detail like other Gfans? And I don't know if you know but I actually do have a right to assume ghidorahs space orgin is cheasy, you have no right to control my thoughts.

GMAN2887(once again)@ Oh and theres more I forgot to say. Your telling me that just because I don't know about over 5 million people around the globe that my evidence sucks. May I ask, how do you find over 5 million people around the globe besides the internet(some people dont always give who they really are). But maybe you can give better respoonses, because all you have been doing is bitching about how this 14 year old can't find enough people to prove that people wouldn't like this orgin, about how I have no right to think that ghidorahs space orgin sounds cheasy(which your wrong), and over all how I didn't give you a 5 paragraph essay explaining my thoughts....save that **** for school, not here.

Now I still am going to be more carefull with language, but you better watch how you present warnings BIGBADBEN, youve been known for saying stupid stuff in the past like me. The whole godzilla is going to fight a mutant rat, hes going to fight hedorah and giving us an un-legit source for your proof. Even if you threaten to bane me thats not going to work, ive been baned by sites many times, my reaction to getting baned from this one wouldn't be any bigger.

Unfortunately, Gojira 2014, , I don't think you quite understand this situation, what from the looks of your argument with GMan the original. You are fully allowed to believe what you want, but if you wish to try and convince the rest of us, you're going to have to make things look professional, structured. and well-mannered, at the very least.

Also, NEVER call out on someone else's opinion as simply being wrong. We can't do that to each other unless officially confirmed as such by the higher powers (a.k.a. the filmmakers). Also, I find that in order to get people to respect your opinions, whether or not they actually agree, you need a certain kind of etiquette and understanding of people and policy.

Just remember that there are plenty of other people here with strong opinions as much as you, but they're more than willing to be polite and try to have a generally neat and organized manner when approaching a discussion. If you want your evidence to hold more credence, at least make it sound like you aren't just pulling random facts out of your personal life. We have a deal?

Gojira2014,
No one, including myself, is trying to control your thoughts. You have every right to believe and assume that King Ghidorah's space origin is cheesy, but this is why I asked for specific evidence as to why it would be cheesy. You currently have nothing distinctive to prove that a vague, King Ghidorah space origin would be considered cheesy by general audiences. Only yourself at the moment.

Meanwhile, myself, Gman123 and The King of the Monsters have given examples of successful films, both critically and at the box office, that have vague origins outside the DC/Marvel realm. (Which you claimed only worked there.)

I also never said your evidence "sucks" and nor did I infer it was because you don't know the general audience one by one. I simply don't think you have any evidence to support your claim that audiences would find it "cheesy". Perhaps if you found film examples of vague origins that have flopped or were ill recieved by critics and general audiences I'd be more inclined to give you the benefit of the doubt. As it stands I simply disagree with and easily dismiss it.

I try to be as polite as possible, but its not easy when people constantly keep asking me for more proof and more proof an so on forth. Have a deal huh, just like bigbadben, I cant confirm whether that last sentence was threat or non-threat. Im not shaking hands just yet, I wana stay and see who else wants to lecture me about my opinion, then i'll shake your hand when I feel like everyone has had thier turn.
