Now that Comic Con is over and the nerd world will likely face a drought, I'll be returning some focus here. The last round was an obvious win for Terror of MechaGodzilla. I'm glad it came around Comic Con as there were less votes. On to the next games:

ROUND 16:

Godzilla: King of the Monsters
 VS. Godzilla 1985

Then please list in what aspect Mothra vs Godzilla crushes note: not slightly is better than, or you simply prefer, actually crushes Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla, and try to be as objective as possible, if we get into preferences I can list aa bunch of reasons why I prefer GvsMG

My number 1 and number 2 of all time never waiver. Mothra Vs. Godzilla is my number 2 favorite G-film, but number 1 in this round.

GMAN2887 - I shall respectfully cast my vote in favor of Mothra vs. Godzilla. :)

I love Mothra vs. Godzilla, but I've always felt it was a touch overrated. As much as everything works, the characters' third act feels really tacked on. Things like that are heavily improved upon in the following two films.

The third act does lose touch. I'll grant that. It didn't need the whole "children trapped" arc. All it needed was the the Twins vs. Godzilla.

And what do I need to "crush" Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla? Special Effects,,, The Mothra puppet itself is more impressive than anything in GvMG. You can throw at me "the number of rays MG has," but really

The original Mothra puppet vs. Godzilla, plus the stop motion, is more impressive than anything Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla did.

If anything, Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla is actually on the lazy side.

^I don't think that's quite fair to say. MechaGodzilla was made in a much different decade, one of decline. It had fewer resources, less time and less of a budget compared to Mothra vs. Godzilla which had Tsuburaya's power behind the scenes that ensured his crew got everything they needed.

I applaud Nakano for accomplishing as much as he did in the 1970s, especially with the MechaGodzilla movies. Even the eye rays were considered the most difficult to animate in the Showa series.

I highly disagree with Mothra having better effects on the grounds alone being the Mothra puppet. MechaGodzilla itself looks amazing, his transformation was well done and while the ape aliens are often laughed at for the cheep masks the transformations of the rest of the body, notably the arm in one scene is very well done, easily equal to hollywood transformations at the time of things like werewolves.

I think I speak for everyone when I say this. Godzilla from 1954-1975 had some of the greatest special effects during its run. Teruyoshi Nakano and Eiji Tsuburaya were and still are the masters. I love Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla 74' but, Mothra vs. Godzilla 64' just really captures the creativity of beautiful, peaceful Mothra duking it out with ugly, dark, and scary Godzilla. Mechagodzilla 74' did have some very brutal monster fights and the James bond style gives it a rush in a good way.

I'm still sticking with Mothra vs. Godzilla. I just consider it one of the few greatest films to date with this famous, legendary franchise. Personally, both films should advance but, only 1 can win and I feel like Mothra vs. Godzilla should be that 1.

I love Mothra vs. Godzilla, but I've always felt it was a touch overrated.

This is one big problem with the Gfandom people get so attached to the idea of the original and Mothra vs Godzilla being the generally accepted first and second best in the series they act like no other movies can touch them, and they succeed in all parts better than every other movie, when in fact there are quite a few movies that can stand up to these two in my opinion and at least be close. Mothra vs Godzilla and the original aren't so untouchable they're in a tier of their own with every other movie miles behind fighting amongst eachother for the rank of 3rd down. Monster Zero, the two showa Mechagodzilla movies, and Godzilla vs Biollante, and some people might include GMK as contenders that easily can stand up to the two greats and at least be close.

The thing is Durp004, the first Godzilla movie was made in only 3 months. While others have had more than that. Now, I'm not saying others can't outdo them. Who knows, when Tohos Godzilla film next year releases, I could very well like it over my 2 favorites. It depends on where and what they are doing.  Like the heisei Gamera trilogy. The 3rd film revenge of iris, is the best since the 1960's. I personally hold it above many films. Heck, after watching Ultraman the next previously, it's also a great kaiju film that I have ranked above others. If you haven't watched Ultraman the next, you seriously need to. Might want to grab about 2 extra pair of shorts for a change. I kid you not, it's awesome! I guaranteed you'll love it.

I don't really take the production time into much account when ranking a movie, the short time some takes might make you appreciate it more, but personally I try to judge the movie on its own merits moreso than what went into making it as I'd have to do the same for every godzilla movie and take all those into accounts when making the movies. The times may change for some but so does the budget and other aspects and difficulties so I can't really go into what one had going for it when I don't know all the problems another movie has faced itself.

As for Gamera 3 being the best movie since the 60s. Maybe in special effects but once again I think overall the same Gmovies I listed as competitors to Gojira and Mothra vs Godzilla could be put against Gamera 3 and be close, most of which were made after the 60s.

"I really don't take the production time into much account when ranking a movie."

Well, you should. Biollante had 4 years of work put into it. Return of Godzilla 84 had 9 years of production time put into it. I'm not starting an argument. All I'm saying is with Biollante, the film is held at a very high ground in the Godzilla series and for good reason. Biollante is just 1 of the few all time greats. The only thing that hurt it during its time was that nobody knew who Biollante was or what the film was going to present. After it failed the box office in Japan, it really hurt Koichi Kawakita.

"Biollante had 4 years of work put into it. Return of Godzilla 84 had 9 years of production time put into it."

Pre-production. For many of those years the movies weren't even greenlit. Godzilla vs. Biollante had one of the shortest (maybe the shortest) production schedule in the Heisei series.

Well, you should.

Not really. If I'm going to praise some great movies for having a short time do I give leeway to some of the worse movies on the ground of short schedules. If I'm correct Godzilla vs Megalon had some insanely low actual shooting time, but the fanbase still generally accepts it to be one of the weaker films in the series. Pretty sure every movie had some type of difficulties it went through some don't have the info as readily available as others, that's why without a deep understanding of what every movie had to do I'm not going to give one more credit on the grounds of simply knowing it had a short time filming. I base it more on the film itself and what it offers.

"Mothra vs Godzilla and the original aren't so untouchable they're in a tier of their own with every other movie miles behind fighting amongst each other for the rank of 3rd down."

Sorry Durp, but that's exactly how I feel about those two. Some may find them overrated. That's fine. To each his own. But for me they're on another level. They are also two G movies I could watch every week and not get bored. They have me pretty much from beginning to end. That's just me; it's just an opinion. I'm not looking to change minds or berate anyone for not liking them. But for me they are 1 and 2, and yes, pretty much everything else falls in behind, although I am partial also to Ghidorah, Monster Zero and KK Vs G. I still have a very soft spot in my heart for those three (can we see a pattern here?). If MZ hadn't been going against G54, it probably would have gotten my vote.

Any way, carry on!

Durp004

MemberBaragonJul-25-2015 11:42 PM

That's fine you enjoy them the most, however personally I find there are a few movies in the series I enjoy more than those two and are easily in an arms length of their quality, maybe even beating them in some aspects.

KoldWarKid62

MemberBaragonJul-26-2015 7:25 AM

^ I totally respect that. There are plenty of fans for which those two are not their favorites, and that's cool. Everyone's going to have/keep their own versions of Godzilla, and what he means to them. If you've seen any of my posts you'll know I favor a more serious and dangerous Godzilla, so it's only natural that I'd be drawn to those two movies moreso, and I'm also partial to early to mid Showa as well. But I don't think that everything else is drivel behind them. There are a lot of movies in all three eras that I love.

Good chatting with you my friend. Be good.

I'll go with Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla. There's a lot to like about Mothra vs. Godzilla but as several of you pointed out on here, the third act was flat. I also could never stand seeing Godzilla lose to those two larvae. Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla is one my favorites. The alien leader is a good villain and MechaGodzilla makes for one of Godzilla's most formidable opponents.

It was almost an upset, but Mothra vs. Godzilla powered through, 10 to 7. Like Monster Zero, Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla put up a good fight.

ROUND 16:

Godzilla: King of the Monsters
 VS. Godzilla 1985

Gonna have to go with King of the Monsters

KoldWarKid62

MemberBaragonJul-29-2015 8:53 AM

I know a lot of people don't care for GKOTM, but I like it and will watch it to this day. Gojira is a much better movie, but I think on the whole, they did a nice job with the Americanization/added scenes. I like the 3rd party perspective on what's happening from Burr's character. It was also my introduction to Godzilla, and the version I grew up with and have seen the most.

Godzilla 1985 for me.

I hope people have not forgotten about the tournament, especially with Round 2 coming up. My vote in this match-up goes to Godzilla: King of the Monsters. I've always enjoyed this version of the film as much as it's classic original and really enjoy the scenes with Raymond Burr.

Godzilla 1985 was the first G film I've ever seen in a theater and it was fun. I enjoyed this version as well but have rarely had the opportunity to see it since. I don't think it's available on dvd or blu-ray but I could be mistaken.

G. H. (Gman)

AdminGodzillaAug-01-2015 5:25 PM

Ray,
You're correct. The film has not been released on DVD or Bluray in North America due to an unspecific rights debacle that's been rumored to "expire" for years now. Supposedly once the rights do expire Toho will be able to sell the film to a US distributor. As of now, however, many fans have resorted to boots in order to see either version of the film on DVD.

And no, I have not forgotten about the tournament myself, but I do wait for more responses before closing a game down. I suppose this round in particular is simply uninteresting to most masses. I also don't like cluttering the forum with a new game everytime the last one ends; so some games aren't exactly as easy to spot as others.

I don't exactly know why, but for some reason I like the American version of Godzilla 1985 more than the American version of the original Godzilla movie. I don't know if it is because I see the GKoTM as dirty for trying to remake a classic, or if Godzilla 1985 (american version) is actually better. I just remember enjoying 1985 more and thinking that it was better at setting the tone and had a definate darker mood.

Mainly adding this since not many people have expressed their opinion on the movies.

Are we moving to the next round? I would think people have had more than enough time to vote. As the person who is the only vote for 1985 I am more than happy to move to the next and have it still lose.

I am going to move to the next round, but I'm going to give the tournament some time to breathe. Less and less have ended up voting, so I'm taking it out of the playing field for a little while. I'll put up the next round soon.
