Godzilla has always been associated with melee fighting games, but could the property benefit from expanding into open world RPG territory? The scale and depth of RPG games offer fans an incredibly immersive experience compared to melee fighting games, but require an expansive storyline to maintain engagement and interest. While Godzilla fighting games have always been fun, we ask the question - is there enough material in the Godzilla cinematic universe to warrant venturing into new genres of game-play?
Play as Humans or Monsters?
The next big question would be - do players assume the role of Human characters, or would fans prefer to assume the role of Godzilla or other Monsters instead? Obviously, fans have always preferred to play as Godzilla and other Monsters, but imagining a survival game where players need to travel, level up and interact with a variety of environments to survive Monster attacks could also be a fun idea. Much like other open world RPGs, like World of Warcraft and the upcoming new Dune: Awakening game - the right developer could capitalise on Godzilla's already expansive lore and provide an incredible experience - for Monster or Human perspectives. Like other open world RPGs, the game could prove to be a lucrative venture as well, the game could offer boosting opportunities like the services in Skycoach to help advance through levels at a quicker pace.
Online Multiplayer or Single Player?
While single player RPGs tend to offer a more thorough storyline and a more intimate experience for the player, the community aspect of online RPGs remain some of the most engaging forms of entertainment among gamers today. Much like other expansive RPGs which adopted an online multiplayer format, like Fallout 76, the established lore was taken to new heights by offering players the opportunity to interact with not only NPCs and the environment - but their friends and other real-world players online as well. Whether approached from the perspective of Monster or Human, the potential of having the game be an online open world experience would likely prove to be more popular.
Mobile or Console / PC?
Although movie-adaptation games seem to favour mobile in most cases, mobile games are severely limited in scope compared to a fully-fledged PC or console game. Considering the size and scope of the environments that would be required for a game worthy of Godzilla's presence, we would have to suggest the game be developed for PC and consoles. While there have been plenty of Godzilla mobile games in the past - none of them were that overwhelming or that memorable. PC and console development is the best option for a Godzilla RPG.
Who would be the best developer?
While there are many hats in the ring for developing high-quality, interactive online RPG games, we would have to suggest Funcom, they bring over 30 years of experience to the table and have produced some pretty robust RPG survival games. Although, some of us do wonder what a Bethesda Godzilla game would look like.
