I don't know what to think of this, out of all the characters from the movie I only liked 3 of them. Hopefully he'll do a better job writing the sequel :o

This is old news. Borinstein hinted he was working on the sequel not long after the film's release.

As disappointing as this is it's not surprising.

PETEDJO6 - This is very interesting news you've presented! Though it's been presented before, it's still neat to have a look at it. Thank you so very much for sharing this with us! :)

As a complete movie I love it esp. Godzilla and mutos and prob. My fav Godzilla film, but if the human characters are the main focus it has to be better in the sequel. Theres no way the producers will make the same mistake twice,  my hopes for a better and more engaging human story.

Welp, I've just lost faith in the quality of the sequel. Here's hoping someone amazing helps him or he actually pulls off a decent film.

He's doing the sequel and Skull Island. They've GOTTA be setting up a shared universe. Considering that four years is a long time for an American sequel to come out and they want to keep Godzilla fresh in our minds I wouldn't be surprised if in Skull Island in two years ol G gets an end credits cameo. Think about how crazy people would go to see the new Kong flick and get an unexpected Godzilla cameo. Edwards stated a long time ago that he was interested in doing a monster island aproach for the sequel so how likely could it be that Skull and Monster Island are one and the same?

I don't know if it's an indicator that Skull Island and Godzilla will be connected, but it makes me wonder if help will be brought onboard with the Godzilla 2 script. He's likely finishing up the Skull Island script right now. At worst he's in the middle of it. I can see additional writers being asked to help out with the sequel if he's needed to stay on Skull Island longer.

His writing was utterly poor and lacked any sense of dread and emotion..DAMNIT WHY!??

You know I should care about this but I don't, the movie come out in 4 years maybe max will get better by then. BTW don't think godzilla will have connection to skull island maybe an Easter egg but that's about it.

One thing we should consider is that while Borenstein did infact write much of the dialogue and some story elements, he was working off of other writers' drafts.

Dave Callaham's draft was re-written by Drew Pearce. Pearce's draft was re-written by Borenstein and parts Borenstein's draft was given polish by Frank Darabont.

I'm interested to see what Borenstein can come up with starting from scratch. The movie's script could've been hindered by too many cooks in the kitchen. We'll have a better idea of what Borenstein can do on his own with Skull Island. November 2016 is a date to watch for Godzilla 2's sake.

And I sort of agree with Maggle. I should be more miffed about this, but the new movie is 4 years away. I'm having trouble feeling one way or another about it right now.

I hope to God that they keep Skull Island and Godzilla in separate universe. We got out fantasy match in 1962. And there's no way Godzilla and Kong could fight, with kong, in the established universe, being 15-20 feet tall, and Godzilla being the tallest he's ever been, 350-400 feet.

Also, I know with most TV shows, the executive producer has all the ideas and tells the writers what to put down. I'm pretty sure that's how they did it with Godzilla as well, which means they will do it with the sequel.

I feel like the films weakness, as well as strengths, are all pointing at Gareth, for putting a soldier in the middle of the story. Military by nature aren't supposed to show much emotion -- I could mean life or death on the battlefield, in a worst-case scenario. I quite liked the character when he was at home, but he was only there for 5 minutes.

AdminGodzillaSep-18-2014 9:04 PM

^I disagree. I think Gareth's directing showed promise. But the script for Godzilla was being penned by Dave Callaham before Edwards was even brought on as director.

If producers really did have the ideas for the writers, then the soldier being center stage is on them. However I don't entirely agree with that either. Everying that was happening with this movie in 2012 points to a bunch of suits and writers trying to crack the story. If anything it was a joint effort of pitching ideas and viewpoints.

I happen to believe that Edwards, for all the slight mistakes he's made due to being a newly-drafted director, has a great deal of potential. There's something, hmm, special in the way he treats his films - as if he knows and respects their value as story-telling mechanisms. We may yet find a wonderful gem in Edwards once he comes into his own! Until then, I choose to remain optimistic. That being said, it could turn out that he's simply in over his head with every project! Time will tell.

As for Borenstein: I certainly hope he'll manage to craft an engaging and worthwhile story with the four years he's been afforded by Warner Brothers and Legendary Pictures. Failing that, he might find himself seeking a new vocation.  Once again, time will tell. :)

I don't dislike Borenstein as much as everyone else here, but I do think there is room for improvement. Stronger characters that you care about would really help the film when there isn't any monster action going on.

Speaking of monsters, I didn't have any problem with what he wrote for the monster origins, actions, etc.

I agree that Kong should be kept small, the essence of his character is his interactions with humans. Godzilla and Kong may not fight but I think its highly likely that they will cross paths. The number one reason for this is plain and simple:MONEY. Legendary knows people would be in awe of a crossover.

But I'm getting off subject. I thought Edwards and Borenstein are a solid team that compliment each other. They just overestimate things. Borensten overestimated the audience being less focused on Godzilla and Edwards overplayed the teasing Godzilla angle. If they don't learn from the fan response than the studio will step in and force changes. I think G2 will be two artists learning from their mistakes.

Akio,Mr.gigan, there is no need to beat down on the writer of this film. He did a decent job with the first film (actually a great job if I may say so). Now please stop it with the moaning and groaning and give him a second chance. Have you ever heard the phrase "learn from your mistakes"? Well then, i'm pretty sure mr.Borinstein has learned from some of his previous mistakes and he will fix them. If the news still saddens you then well thats your problem, but just for your information you may go ahead and complain about the writer for Godzilla 2 but realisticly your complains and demands will not change the fact that Max Borinstein is indeed the writer for Godzilla 2. And besides, I bet niether one of us could have made a better godzilla movie than the one Borinstein made to be realistic, this film was made for everybody, not just the G fans. As one guy on youtube once said, if your going to make a film like this...your not going to please the masters. And if you really thought that this movie was really only made for us Gfans specificly then you need to check the movie news more. As I said, GIVE HIM A CHANCE. Don't let your emotions get the best of you, I believe Max can pull this off.

not gonna lie, pretty dissapointed, human factor was a bit dissapointing.....hopefully this movie will focus more on Serizawa than the military, having a military point of view was cool, but if thats the point of view they go with for every movie in the series i will be upset, change it up, show how people are actually affected by these monsters.....

another thing, hopefully he writes a script where godzilla is seen more tbh, and please dont flame me or start saying 'Oh jaws this alien that', 'he was in it enough, other godzilla movies yada yada'

yes i get that, but realistically, you would all like to see godzilla more....the parts he was in, i felt sometimes gareth intentionally made shots of him where he would be there for a second and than human part kicks in......like the bridge scene wheere it pans out and we see him in full size, than it goes right to the army arming the device....like really.....you couldnt show the army trying to do a bit more to him?? they just pan away, even when he was getting crushed by the 2 mutos, intentionally go to him for 2 seconds of footage, than pan to the army moving the bomb....

i understand too 'he's teasing us yada yada' thats fine for the first movie....however hes established now, absolutely no need to 'tease' us with scenes like that for the rest of the series, if he wants to do a all out monsters style movie, he better go with the directing style too and actually show footage of the monsters for a big period of time and make them the focus not the background.....

that being said hopefully they get a big ass budget for this movie, another 50-100 mil would be nice aha, and yes this went from a writing rant to a directing rant, just didnt feel the need to make another thread or bring up an old one for it
