It's looking like it's going to beat King of the Monsters' final box office take as well.
If this movie breaks $400 million during a global pandemic with less theaters open when King of the Monsters could not, that's... embarrassing.
It's currently one of the top 30 grossing Hollywood films in China with $165.4 million. It will pass Skull Island's $160 million Chinese gross next week to become the most successful Monsterverse film in that country.

@Gman
I think one of the reasons King of the Monsters underperformed was that it had to deal with major competition. Avengers: Endgame was released shortly before KOTM and made over 2.7 billion. With the massive hype and success that Endgame had, Godzilla was unfortunately overshadowed.

SasquaDash,
Also it came out a week after Aladdin. King of the Monsters only barely beat Aladdin in its second weekend and even then, Godzilla only made more than it on Friday. Aladdin made barely less Saturday and Sunday. King of the Monsters was lucky it made enough on Friday to beat it.
Aladdin had no problem with Avengers: Endgame's prior success. Aladdin made over $1 Billion. King of the Monsters finished with less than $390 million.

@Gman
Yeah, I think the massive successes of Avengers: Endgame and Aladdin, as well the more negative critic reviews, hurt King of the Monsters' box office returns.
Godzilla vs Kong doesn't have any major competition and recieved more positive reviews which probably helped to make it a success.

Exactly. With no competition, of course it was going to dominate.

Not to mention the title alone will draw in way more people than a solo Godzilla or Kong flim. Since most people have the basic idea of how a movie with a famous kaiju like Godzilla or Kong is gonna go, to most people its refreshing to see a "new"(or atleast new to most people) idea such as those two monsters fighting. In short, this movie appealled more to the average person than the previous installations.

@G theorist
Yeah, unfortunately general audiences aren't really familiar with Ghidorah, Rodan, and Mothra. Having Godzilla fight Kong attracts more attention because they are both big name characters crossing paths, so the film feels more like a big event film, rather than being just another Godzilla or Kong movie.

Just posted about this on the front page. It is rather mind-boggling to think GvK could outperform KOTM... during a pandemic release. As much as I enjoyed GvK, I don't know if its entirely a better film than KOTM. Add to the pandemic the... what, 5 release date shifts it had? Not many people even knew when GvK was going to release until amonth prior. It's unbelievable its done so well by comparison.

OH YEAH

According to Deadline, it's made $96.4 million in profit. This might yo-yo a bit if WB decides to keep it in theaters longer (which is likely), but it'll be worth it in the long run.
