The tokusatsu business, as a whole, is made up entirely of miracles.
Varios series, movies or manga always go through thousands of versions before we get the final product.
For example, ultraman zero was originally going to be “ultraseven ax”, and be entirely red in color, closer to his father, ultraseven.
Think about this, what if a person from an alternate universe where ultraman zero was realized as his original concept, ultraseven ax? How would they react to seeing ultraseven ax replaced by this new character? Would he think ultraman zero to be a butchering of ultraseven ax?
That is the main idea of this topic, a collection of what ifs centered around tokusatsu, and how a person from another universe were these what-ifs happened.
Chapter 1: what if power rangers never existed?
Power rangers is a pop culture icon, even more so than its original form, super sentai.
Power rangers popularity has put more spotlight on super sentai in america, its thanks to power rangers we have super sentai dvds in america.
But what if saban never used sentai footage to make power rangers and power rangers never existed? Would sentai still be able to get into america?
Chapter 2: What if King Kong never made it to japan?
If king kong, never made it to japan, its likely that godzilla would be far different from what we know today, godzilla might not even exist in a universe were king kong never made it to japan.
Chapter 3: What if Hideaki anno was not depressed when he made neon genesis evangelion?
Neon genesis evangelion is widely considered one of the best anime of all time due to its brutal depictions of clinical depression, but would it still be regarded the same way if Hideaki anno was not depressed when he made the show and did not include any of the depression or darker tones we've come to know evangelion for? Would it have less of an impact?would it just be a little indie show overlooked by tokusatsu fans? Would the rebuild films exist? And would neon genesis evangelion still be loved as much as it is today? Would it still be on best animes of all time lists?
How would someone from an alternate universe were evangelion was just a little show about giant cyborgs fighting aliens and nothing more react to evangelions lasting power today?
What they know as just an indie show crossing over with ultraman, kamen rider, even godzilla!
But if we went to their universe, were eva was minuscule in the grand scheme of tokusatsu, we would have the same kind of reaction.
Thats all i have for today, leave your what-ifs in the comments section below!

MemberBaragonJan-27-2023 12:00 PMDoes Evangelion count as tokusatsu?
I mean it has tokusatsu influences but its animated which is a completely different medium to tokusatsu, which is live action.

MemberAnguirusJan-27-2023 12:05 PMwell, animation is an effect that is special, and tokusatsu is special effects in japanese so....... I guess it falls under the giant umbrella of tokusatsu.

MemberGiganMar-17-2023 10:27 AMI heard that originally Neon Genesis Evangelion was supposed to be a 50 Episode Anime but after Episode 18, moral guardians in Japan freaked out over the violence in that episode.
The part where Evangelion Unit 03 and to a lesser extent its pilot Touji being mercilessly ripped apart by a dummy plug controlled Evangelion Unit 01.
The production company GAINAX had their budget cut for the rest of evangelion's production hence why the show was reduced down to 26 episodes and why infamous scenes like the extended elevator scene and the last two episodes were implemented (due to budget reasons)

AdminGodzillaMar-17-2023 5:34 PMDidn't help that Anno didn't finish the teleplay for the final episodes days before they were suppose to air.

I didn't know that. Wait was Anno recovering from depression or was he in his depression while making Neon Genesis Evangelion?

As I understand it, he was still struggling with it.

MemberGiganMar-22-2023 4:48 AMI wonder if Evangelion would have still been a hit if everything went more smoothly and according to schedule?

MemberGiganMar-28-2023 10:50 AMI mean, I never did watch Evangelion. But it is interesting to think about. Kind of like what would of happened if Godzilla '98 was actually faithful to the source material and was a hit.
