MemberTitanosaurusFeb-09-2014 6:10 PMGodzilla and King Kong. Both are highly regarded, superiorly famous/infamous, well known and loved monsters who have changed the face of the earth in their time. But who is known by the world more? King Kong arrived about two decades before Godzilla and was very popular in the early 1930's. While having no powers (other than the electric power introduced in the 1960's King Kong vs. Godzilla), King Kongs sheer strength, human-like nature, and famous jaw ripping finisher has captured the imagination of people of all ages. Godzilla has been the King of the Monsters since his first movie in 1954. He is a symbol of nuclear destruction, made by people who witnessed it in the second World War. An indestructible force of nature, (a term not to be used lightly) Godzilla has fought a variety of earth-bound and space monsters, giant robots, and thousands of buildings. Godzilla has starred in 28 movies (not counting the 1998 tri-star american version, which should be renamed Zilla), more than any other movie character to date, with many more on the way (I am pretty sure after 2014, Toho will be getting back to work on their creation). With an iconic roar and powerful Atomic Breath, Godzilla will always reign supreme over all the worlds monsters. But who does the world recoginze more, the giant ape or the giant dinosaur? I'm not sure because I respect both monsters too much to make a decision (and i don't have the resources to go around the world and ask). I mean, their both great monsters, they've leveled cities, raise kids (king kong does have a son, look it up) and have excellent reputations. SO what are you're thoughts?

MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-09-2014 9:13 PMWow, it actually comes close. King Kong was the first giant movie monster while Godzilla was the third. However, due to the numerous movies and merchandise with different "versions" of Godzilla...54 was evil..then he was the hero, then he became neutral..then an American version...and now a new movie taking it into a realistic "horror" sense..Although Kong has been around slightly longer, and an incredible version by Peter Jackson, Godzilla has had generatios grow old WITH him. So just as the cool fellow above me stated..Godzilla is more well known, but just by a little.

MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-09-2014 9:14 PMNehh I think King Kong is more known. But you know of course people might find it familiar if asked if they know Godzilla, but all they'll think of is a fire-breathing dinosaur or just a giant dragon, its not like they KNOW what Godzilla is, but everyone seems to know more of what King Kong is. Oh yeah, and people might even think Godzilla as a tuna-eating iguana

MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-10-2014 1:27 AMOn a partially relevant note, I remember once mentioning Godzilla in a conversation, and the person responded with "Oh, you mean that giant gorilla?"
As silly as it may seem, I think that some people unfamiliar with the daikaiju genre might actually mix the two up. I think this person thought "Godzilla" sounded like "gorilla" and therefore mistook him for Kong. For some reason, I bet there are more people who make that mistake! I'm not even sure how to guess which kaiju is better known, since some people might even get 'em mixed up. Both Godzilla and King Kong are household names, though, surely.

MemberBaragonFeb-10-2014 4:26 AMknown in name alone, or actually seeing a movie?
They're both very known in name alone as they are parodied, referenced, and have been around forever, so pretty even in that sense, but if it's people who know about the characters and have seen at least 1 movie it's gotta be Kong by a long shot.

MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-10-2014 5:18 AMIn my personal experience, I think its about the same. Though I would say both have had similar effects on their respective culture.
King Kong has inspired an entire generation of film makers in the west where as Godzilla, which was is technically inspired by Kong and other similar works, has inspired an entire generation of film makers in the East.
But if this is a pissing contest of which monster is better known-- its impossible to say.
