Godzilla... Truly a God incarnate.

AdminGodzillaApr-28-2017 12:53 PMI mean, you could probably pick any character from Monster Zero and that would be good enough for me. Gleen and Fuji in particular are outstanding, but Tetsuo is also very underrated.
Katsura from Terror of MechaGodzilla is also one of my favorites. She's quite conflicted.
And, of course, Dr. Serizawa from the original movie as multiple layers to his wonderful character that are probably overlooked now simply because everybody assumes him as a default favorite.

The King of the Monsters
MemberBaragonApr-28-2017 6:01 PMI've long regarded Akira Nakao's G-Force Commander Takaki Aso as one of my favorite characters in the Godzilla series. Aso starts out as a stereotypical authoritative military figure who seems to have a short temper, but undergoes very subtle character development throughout the films, quite remarkable for a side character. Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla hints at Aso's JSDF past, with Akira Yuki mocking how much he has changed since he was Yuki's commanding officer, saying that "too many stupid meetings can change a man's destiny." Despite his stern and cold demeanor, he is the first G-Force member to visibly express concern about Yuki's fate after the film's final battle. In Godzilla vs. Destoroyah he has a larger story role, and while he doesn't really do much in the film he has become a much more empathetic and relatable character. By the end of the film, he's just as somber and stoic as all the other characters following Godzilla's death, even though two films prior he was completely fixated on Godzilla's destruction. Aso may not be the most prominent or developed character in the franchise, but I appreciate how he is a little more than the simple stern military leader, thanks in large part to Akira Nakao's performance, which ranges from very powerful and unrestrained to quiet and nuanced.
The Showa series has a lot of memorable human characters, and it would be too difficult for me to mention every standout that comes to mind. I'll give special mention to Akira Takarada as charismatic thief Yoshimura from Ebirah, Horror of the Deep, Nick Adams as Glenn from Invasion of Astro-Monster, Akihiko Hirata as Daisuke Serizawa from the original film, and Goro Mutsumi as the Black Hole Alien Leader Kuronuma in Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla.
I also have to recognize Toru Minegishi as Colonel Goro Gondo from Godzilla vs. Biollante. While that film had some issues balancing its cast of characters, I enjoyed every moment Gondo was on screen and was legitimately upset at his death.

AdminGodzillaApr-28-2017 6:24 PMAh Yoshimura is a good one. Perhaps my favorite Takarada role in the series. I loved how different the part was compared to so many other characters played by him.
