Ghidorah's Tails: What Are They Used For?
GojiFanPat
MemberBaragonMay-03-2019 10:22 AMI've noticed that nobody has really covered this detail, probably because it's very minor. But during the IMAX trailer, when Godzilla and Ghidorah are facing off, it cuts to Ghidorah, who then lightly roars at Godzilla. During that scene, if you look and listen very closely, you can hear a rattling sound, similar to a rattlesnake when threatened, and actually see Ghidorah shaking his tails. Also, when we first see Ghidorah, we see his tail, with his tail spikes proceeding to open up, making a slight rattling sound in the process. So, what's the significance of this? Simple: Ghidorah is trying to intimidate Godzilla. He does this as a way to say, "Don't mess with me, I'm bigger and stronger than you." This is just a minor but unique detail that they added to Ghidorah, especially since his movements are similar to that of a Cobra when it's about to strike. Let me know what you think about this, and if you think that it's a cool detail or not.

MemberBaragonMay-03-2019 12:08 PMI think it is pretty cool considering Ghidorah's tails have never been used aside from being used as while strong enough to send Godzilla flying back now they have interest and development.

MemberTitanosaurusMay-03-2019 12:22 PMI really like the detail of them essentially being spiked rattlesnake tails.
The fact that Ghidorah couples the rattling by straightening himself up and spreading his wings wide is extra cool, since that's a very commonly seen kind of pose for animals who try to look as big and threatening as possible.

MemberRodanMay-03-2019 12:40 PMI agree with y'all, but it remains to be seen if Ghidorah can use his tails in battle

MemberRodanMay-03-2019 2:02 PMThat's pretty cool, like an actual animal, but they're also supposed to be gods...... IS THIS SYMBOLISM OF HUMANS BEING NOTHING MORE THAN ANIMALS?!!! XD! Wait, has there ever been symbolism in a Godzilla film? I really doubt this is actually symbolic... but have any Godzilla films ever had symbolism or a deep meaning, besides maybe the 1954 original?
If people weren't lazy, we wouldn't try to be efficient. If we weren't efficient, we'd never get anything done.

Tell me you're joking....

MemberMothra LarvaeMay-06-2019 7:54 AMTheLazyFish, I don't know if you are joking, but here goes. Gojira(1954) was a metaphor for the dangers of nuclear weapons. Godzilla Raids Again(1955) is a metaphor for the price of progress. Godzilla vs. Hedorah(1971), had a very strong environmental message, portraying Godzilla fighting pollution. Jumping forward, Shin Godzilla was a metaphor for the ineffectiveness of the governement in handling the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in 2011. Also, from Gojira(1954), through the Heisei era, Godzilla films show how the Japanese people felt about the United States. Godzilla became gradually friendlier as Japan became closer to the U.S., but by the time the Heisei era arrived, Japan had begun to change its view. This is most evident in Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah(1991), when the U.S. troops are portrayed as stupid and incompetent. Symbolism was the origin of the Godzilla franchise, and still continues to be a driving force in its development.

MemberMothra LarvaeMay-06-2019 8:44 AMThis actually funny that this was posted. My buddy and I were just talking about this. I told him to pay attention to Ghidorah’s tail and listen to it rattle. I remember reading an article about Dougherty explaining that they made Ghidorah to be similar to a snake. So pay attention to that tail and his movements. Also worth noting, in the trailer when his three heads simultaneously attack Big G, the attack is similar to a snake bite times 3!!!

AdminGodzillaMay-06-2019 10:08 AMGodzilla Movie Reviews,
Listing all of this is really an exercise in undermining all the individual variables that make up themes and meanings that are truly too broad to list. The bottom line is pretty much every one of these movies is about something, even when they don't pull it off.

MemberRodanMay-06-2019 12:35 PMThe tails are rather long, so they might be used a clubs

MemberTitanosaurusMay-06-2019 12:59 PMBut they're also relatively thin, and the spikes are retractable and also very thin themselves. Ghidorah himself is quite forward-oriented. He has better reach and maneuverability towards his front.
Then again, he can also stretch, twist, and swivel his heads a great many degrees, so perhaps that's not too much of an issue.

When someone asked the question.

MemberMothra LarvaeMay-07-2019 5:02 AMBuilding on what TheGMan123 said about Ghidorah being forward oriented, I think the tails might be used to hold off an attack from behind and give Ghidorah time to turn around.

MemberBaragonMay-07-2019 10:56 AMG. H. (Gman) Ok. Thanks for the clarification.
As for my opinion, I think they are used for slashing (sharp-edged tail), bashing (club tail), intimidation, and constricting (like a snake).

MemberMothra LarvaeMay-07-2019 5:51 PMObviously the ends of Ghidorah's tails are serves to hitting. The rattle noise was only added to give it more sinister, like the Dilpohosaurus frill from Jurassic Park: if you pay attention, each time it unfolds, it sounds a rattle.

MemberBaragonMay-14-2019 8:51 AMReally? I didn't notice that or try to listen for anything when we first King Ghidorah and his tails.
