MemberTitanosaurusJan-08-2020 3:31 PMWhat's this? A Godzilla thread that isn't MonsterVerse speculation of monster matchups? GASP!
*ahem* Anyways, the Godzilla franchise has been around for 65 years. And in that time, we've gotten a lot of great music from the series. So which movie or video game has your favorite soundtrack, or which individual theme is your favorite?
My personal overall soundtrack picks are:
-Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964)
-Destroy All Monsters (1968)
-Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975)
-The Return of Godzilla (1984)
-Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla (1994)
-Godzilla (1998)
-Godzilla 2000: Millennium (1999)
-Godzilla vs. Megaguirus (2000)
-GMK (2001)
-Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla (2002)
-Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. (2003)
-Godzilla: Unleashed (2007)
-Godzilla (2014)
-Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)
Runners up (individual soundtracks) would be:
-"Godzilla vs. Kumonga" (Son of Godzilla)
-"Mechagodzilla vs. Anguirus" (Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla)
-"Requiem" (Godzilla vs. Destoroyah)
-"Godzilla's Theme" (Godzilla: Final Wars)
-"Black Angels" (Shin Godzilla)
-"Under a Burning Sky" (Shin Godzilla)
-"Who will know - Tragedy" (Shin Godzilla)
A true fan can acknowledge the bad while still appreciating and cherishing the good.

AdminGodzillaJan-08-2020 7:21 PMJurassicKaiju14,
You have struck gold with one of my favorite topics and I don't even know how to start. As much of a fan as I am of the Godzilla series, my love for the music is almost a different animal altogether it's so strong.
I'm not sure if I could narrow down my favorites, but I usually default to Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, which was Ifukube's triumphant return--Coming out of retirement to bring some real gravitas to Godzilla and his arch enemy.
Others include, but are probably not limited to, Mothra vs. Godzilla - Akira Ifukube (1964), Monster Zero - Akira Ifukube (1965), Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla - Masaru Sato (1974), Terror of MechaGodzilla - Akira Ifukube (1975), Return of Godzilla - Reijiro Koroku (1984), Godzilla x Megaguirus - Michiru Oshima (2000), Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack - Koh Otani (2001) and Godzilla: Tokyo SOS - Michiru Oshima (2003).
I did an entire game/contest with the forum on this very topic a few years back.

MemberRodanJan-08-2020 7:26 PMSo... I guess I can't really choose a "favorite." Also... the theme from Godzilla V.S. King Ghidorah is kick ass.

MemberGodzillaJan-08-2020 8:01 PMThe main theme sticks out with me since it seems to pop up in all the movies I have seen. It has both a foreboding tone and an inspirational sound to it.
Like many movies, I don't really notice the music much when watching a movie- and that is a compliment. The music helps fill out the over all experience. If I notice the music too much then that means I am getting bored with other aspects of the movie. Hopefully that makes sense.

MemberBaragonJan-08-2020 9:42 PMG.H. (Gman), This is bizarre, but your picks are almost identical to mine. Even if I find some of those movies to be meh, The music is incredible. One I would add to that is Destroy all monsters; the opening theme and the monster land theme I adore.

AdminGodzillaJan-08-2020 10:23 PMmacumbalove,
Even if the movie sucks, usually the music is still fantastic. The Godzilla series has a pretty consistent record of great music. Even the few misfires are still pretty easy to listen to.

MemberAnguirusJan-09-2020 5:26 AMHere are a few:
The original theme (any variation), Persecution of the Masses (Shin), The Beginning (98), and Godzilla! (14).

Zwei Wing is the best singing duo. Change my mind.

MemberAnguirusJan-09-2020 8:21 AMI like the new version of "Godzilla" but the 1977 one is still one of my top 23 favorites.

AdminGodzillaJan-09-2020 10:32 AMMonster_Zero 2112,
1977?
Trash panda
MemberAnguirusJan-09-2020 11:11 AMYeah. Blue Oyster Cult made it in 1977 and it's on their "Spectres"(1977) and "Don't Fear The Reaper: The Best Of Blue Oyster Cult" (Feb.8, 2000) albums.

MemberTitanosaurusJan-09-2020 12:36 PMIt's absolutely incredible how we disagree and argue over the movies themselves and which ones we consider the best, but then we get to the music and all of a sudden we're all pretty much on the same page.
Moments of finding common ground like this always make me feel a little happier. :)

MemberRodanJan-09-2020 1:57 PMYeah. Though I prefer it when we all have different opinions, but all respectfully listen to one another. Those are the sweetest moments, in my opinion.
It's also hard to disagree when ALL the music is awesome XD.

AdminGodzillaJan-09-2020 3:33 PMFor giggles, I'll post some trivia from the second soundtrack challenge, which I cancelled a couple of years back:
Elite Question
What movie is it from?
Who is the composer?
What scene is it from?
JurassicKaiju14
MemberTitanosaurusJan-09-2020 3:43 PM(a) Let's see, it kinda sounds like Ifukube's Ghidorah theme, so...Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster?
(b) Akira Ifukube.
(c) I'm gonna take a wild guess and say the final battle scene from Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster.

Gomi: Ninja Monster
MemberBaragonJan-09-2020 5:01 PM1. Sounds partly like a slower version of the music that plays during the part where the humans destroy the control gyroscope in Destroy All Monsters. Given Ifukube's tendency to reutilize older work, I'm gonna guess Battle in Outer Space maybe?
2. Akira Ifukube
3. A chase scene? I don't know, I haven't seen that movie.
G. H. (Gman)
AdminGodzillaJan-09-2020 8:16 PMYou guys are definitely beating around the bush. You're in that neighborhood and of course have the composer down. I'll reveal the answer tomorrow night if no one gets it by then.

Hmm, upon comparison I see/hear I was definitely off in my initial guess, which now brings up the question of why I thought I recognized that so quickly. Must be triggering something else, more research is needed.
Also, seeing everyone so unanimous about something Godzilla-related is truly beautiful, but I find the lack of appreciation for Crystal from GvsSpaceG, Goodbye Godzilla, and the Hanna-Barbera theme song very disappointing. :P
G. H. (Gman)
AdminGodzillaJan-09-2020 9:01 PMGomi: Ninja Monster,
I have no doubt you recognize it from another movie.
Gomi: Ninja Monster
MemberBaragonJan-09-2020 9:05 PMG. H. (Gman)
YEP. That's the one. I knew it had to be in "The Best of Godzilla" soundtracks somewhere.
G. H. (Gman)
AdminGodzillaJan-09-2020 9:07 PMYep. This piece initially debuted in another film--Unsurprisingly. Just about all of Ifukube's Heisei material is lifted from the Showa era and thrown in stereo. Not that I'm complaining, it was nice to hear these pieces re-orchestrated.
Gomi: Ninja Monster
MemberBaragonJan-09-2020 9:13 PMIndeed, makes me doubly disappointed that KOTM didn't get more Ifukube tracks to remaster/remix.
Well, now I'm wondering if this piece has anything to do with Varan's movie...
G. H. (Gman)
AdminGodzillaJan-09-2020 9:54 PMAlthough I'm not a big fan of the movie, I think King of the Monsters is the best Godzilla score since Tokyo SOS. Would more Ifukube have been nice? Sure, but McCreary's themes were robust, plentiful and catchy too--So no complaints. Just using Ifukube's Godzilla theme was plenty--Especially the spin he put on it.
TheLazyFish
MemberRodanJan-09-2020 11:37 PMI kinda liked some of the Shin Godzilla tracks a bit more than any of the ones of KOTM, but by a VERY close margin.

JurassicKaiju14
MemberTitanosaurusJan-10-2020 5:15 AMTheLazyFish Shin has good music when it's using original scores. But when it's just reusing tracks from older movies, it fell kinda flat for me.
I feel KOTM's score works because it doesn't just flat out copy the old tunes, but adds new spins on them to make them feel new.
